Decorating a cake for fall

Note: This tutorial assumes that you have some very basic cake skills. Nothing advanced is needed just the ability to lay down a relatively smooth coat of icing and maybe the ability to use a basic piping bag. No stress. The worst thing that happens if you mess up is you wipe if off and try again, or in the case of a massive error, eat the cake.(not a horrible trial really)

Note 2: For the purpose of this tutorial I don’t care what type of cake you are using or what shape it happens to be. This means go for whatever makes you happy in terms of the actual cake.

Step 1- bake and cool your cake of choice. (skip this step if you happen to have a target cake in mind.)

Step 2- brush off any visible crumbs with a brush, silocon brush or a tea towel. If you have to, move it to anew plate.

Step 3- Put on a thin layer , or crumb coat of white onto your cake. Give it some time to dry.

Step 4- Prepare your top coat of icing with the right color. Then apply the icing with your favorite tool and smooth it out, so that the icing is not lumpy or lopsided.

Step 5- Load your piping bag with the icing and tip of your choice.

- Use a star tip to make rows of star points

- Use the traditional circle tip to drizzle icing in a drippy pattern around the rim

- Use a ridged, fat circle tip to make a swag and drape pattern for the cakes sides.

Note 3: A word on icing and color. These techniques as well as any piping or drawing on the cake should be in fall colors to match the season and the base colors. Some of the colors that you may wan to use in fall are:

-Light brown

-Chocolate brown

-Yellow/gold

-Orange

-Deep red/crimson

-Dark green

Colors to avoid

- white

- neons-

Pastels

-Blues

- Christmas/Hannuka traditional color mixes (really any holiday schemes that aren’t the one you are decorating for are a good candidate to advoid)

-Easter like schemes/ or general spring like pastels.

--traditional flower petals

Well, that is the long and the short of it. It was not as bad as you thought it would be, and unlike that bakery cake you would buy, no one else has this one. If you cant pipe, juts take a knife or fork and make a textured pattern on the cake.
