What is Window Film?
Window film is basically a plastic adhesive that sticks to windows to (1) limit heat and lessening cooling costs, (2) protect privacy on the other side of the window, (3) protect the furniture and accessories on the other side, and (4) create a pretty pattern on the window.
You can find window film in basic, solid colors ranging from shades of black, blue, green, read, and yellow, as well as various patterns and appearances.
Decorative Glass Patterns are wide and varied, some of the more common styles of decorative film include:
- Frosted glass
- Stained glass
- Block glass
Window film is can be an elegant way to spruce up the average window, while it helps prevent scratches and marks. Window film, also, prevents the from being painted on and makes it stronger, overall, making the window more difficult to break.

How to Apply Window Film
- Make sure to clean the window before your start. Any blemishes will show after your coat the window with the film, so it's very important to thoroughly clean the with soap and water.
- Unroll the film and cut a piece that's about 1" larger than your window.
- Remove the liner on the back of the film and spray both the window and the backside of the film with soapy water.
- Apply the film to the window carefully. Start with the top and move your way down, sliding the film into place.
- Once on the window, spray the film again with soap and water, and use a squeegee to carefully remove all of the bubbles between the film and the window. (You can leave a small perimeter on the outside of the window alone because you can work with that area later.)
- Once you've smoothed out most of the film, use a straight edge and a razor to trim the extra film, making it sit flush with the glass, and then use a little soapy water to the edges and squeegee the bubbles.
- Once you've successfully applied the window film, it should fully dry and adhere in about a half an hour.
Tips:
- The further along you are when applying the film, the more important it is to use more water to insure that the film cures properly.
- Let the film cure for about a week before you clean the surface with a window cleaner.
- If you're covering a wide window, follow the same steps, but overlap the film in the middle by about an inch. Spray the center generously with soapy water and make sure that the pieces are 100% equal and aligned. Towards the end of the application, you should be able to carefully remove the top piece that overlaps.

Cool hub. I put film on my windows to keep heat in, but I've never tried this. You learn something new everyday on this site. Thanks!
Great hub, with lots of good information on window film!
Now that many people now know about window films, maybe there should be tips on which to choose for one's room? Sometimes blocking the glare and darkening the room may not be enough. Good hub. I'm into home improvement, too.

I've never seen window film before. What a great idea! It's easier than curtains or shades and easy to change. I'm going to get some, Thanks for the Hub!
