Dedicated to the Ugly American, Mrs. A. Brokenrightwing

(as introduced to us in the wonderful hub of Immartin)

Hey! You up there sitting on that perch!

You seem so comfy sitting there,

Like a vulture sitting there ready to lurch,

On the carcass of some dead hare.

If you were a real American,

     You wouldn’t be so proud,

If you understood how it all began,

You’d be hiding ‘neath a shroud.

You’d know that this great legacy,

Is based on freedom for all,

And we, who live in the USA,

Are a small part of the whole.

For America is far too vast,

     And steeped in cultures deep,

          Containing those of every cast,

And type that man can reap.

From the deep, white snows of Canada,

To the pampas wet with rain,

          The children of America,

               Each struggle, sweat, and strain.

The opinions vary far and wide,

From left to right and south to north,

As to which is the one and very best side,

Or the way we should go forth.

There may never be a solution,

As to who is right or wrong,

          Independent resolution,

Is the core of Freedom’s Song.

So, be careful sitting on that perch,

     Cause perches often crumble,

Who knows, no one may even search,

For one who’s oh so humble.

The hate you sow is the hate you reap,

If you’d read the Bible you’d know that,

The love you give is the love you keep,

               Virtually all religions teach that!

I love it, papajack and I'm so proud I inspired you to write this wonderful poem. Thank you, thank you.

And this is exactly how i believe. All of us, as you say are Americans, though that term is applied generally to the inhabitants of the U.S. and the one thing we share is this -- most of us in ancestry came from somewhere else. Who are the offspring of immigrants to tell the modern day immigrants they have no place. And let's not forget another thing we (all the Americas) have in common. We stole the land from those already here.

I linked this poem to my hub. Hope that's okay.

I was worried that you might be offended. But I stewed all night after reading your hub. I woke up this morning and it was almost completed in my head. It only took me 2 hours to write it out and clean it up. I'm just glad that you like it.

WOW! Papajack, this is such a wonderful piece of writing! Beautiful and so from the heart. It brought tears to my eyes. If we could only give each other a bit of grace what a difference it would make! Kartika

Wonderful - thanks for sharing. I'm, like you, an older youngster who has many questions about my generation and the generations which are coming up. Let's just keep our minds and eyes open and stay loving and alert!

Love and peace

Tony
