Josei manga is manga for women

It's complicated!

Uzamaki complained on adamroll13's hub that there weren't many hubs on manga. I didn't know what manga was, so I decided to look into it and to share what I learned with fellow boomers. I don't like being clueless.

Turns out, I do know what it is. I just didn't know the proper name. In fact, I wrote a hub on graphic novels and as Stephanie M on Urban Dictionary explains, "Manga is different from American comic books in many ways, which is why it is sometimes translated as graphic novels."

According to wiseGEEK, "Manga is the Japanese word for comics. It is used in the English-speaking world as a generic term for all comic books and graphic novels that were originally published in Japan. However, Manga is often considered an artistic and storytelling style that can also encompass non-Japanese works. The term AmeriManga is sometimes used to refer to comics created by American artists in a Manga style. Manwha is the Korean equivalent of that idea."

I started to wonder, how is manga different from anime? I have watched lots of Japanese anime like "Totoro" and "Princess Mononoke" because my son was into all these films and got the rest of the family watching them several years ago.

Turns out manga are the still cartoons and anime is animated movies. But I get confused at this point because some of what is called manga is moving like some of the examples of manga I selected to the right. Maybe Uzamaki can clarify this for me. I hope! Is it simply that a cartoon became animated and remains under the manga category because that is where it originated?I can't seem to find a site that discusses this.

There are all types of manga. The Urban Dictionary lists the following:

Kodomo manga is for children.

Shoujo manga is for girls age 12-18.

Josei manga is for adult ladies above the age of 20, mainly working women.

Hentai manga is pornographic adult manga.

From knowledgerush...

Shonen is a style of anime and manga intended for boys 12-18, but that may have a crossover appeal to girls as well. Some good examples are Gundam Wing, Dragon Ball Z, and Fist of the North Star.

Anime and manga for men ages 18-30 is called seinen, though shonen and seinen are often lumped together by Westerners.

Gekiga- realistic manga usually for men

OVA= Original Video Animation (made for video)

Well you have displayed most of the things about manga but there are some things that i know about manga. besides reading it from right to left instead of left to right and and it written in japanese and then translated into several different languages. Well the real meaning of manga it pretty much litterealy means " whimsical pictures " and the modern manga outbreak came out quickly after World War 2. in one of your writings, Naruto shippuden or Naruto Hurricane Chronicles By Masashi Kishimoto. Is one of the leading Shonen manga I think you might want to put that part in.

well you will laugh but i went to the library today and checked out lots of manga. but before i did, i looked at the shelves and i was afraid, haha. i couldn't even see the titles of the books because it was so overwhelming to me!!! i am not kidding. happily a friend of my kids came up at that moment and he is really into manga and he showed me how to find what i wanted and even recommended lots of cool titles. so i am all set. i have a batman and an Othello and Lenore and Pride and Y The Last Man. He really knows his stuff and wanted me to read 300 but i don't think i am ready for it because he says it is pretty violent even if it is a CLASSIC!!!!!!!!

So, there are classic manga too, haha. cool.

I am a manga fan but I never really thought of the 'behind the scenes' so much - I was just enthralled by the incredible detail they put into the art. Thanks for the info!
