The Definition of Insomnia and Recognising the Signs
59Introduction
Millions of people all over the world are not fully aware of what
insomnia really is. Some simply think that it means you can't fall asleep, and others have varying myths about this
common problem. When a person is in a situation where they cannot sleep
for more than a couple of hours a day for an entire week or more, this is the
definition of insomnia.
When people find themselves unable to
sleep for a long period of time, then a doctor needs to be seen. When faced with the problem, some people will find it near impossible to
fall asleep, and they will usually not even feel sleepy at all.
Most of us have this from time to time, but for some it's more persistent.
The person will be tired and
irritable the next day, when they didn't get any sleep the night
before. No matter how tired they feel, they will still find it very
hard to go to sleep. The truth is that this disorder can become very serious.
Common Insomnia Symptoms
Some of the most common symptoms of insomnia include:
- Always feeling anxious,
- waking up during the night many times,
- weight gain,
- and finding it near impossible to go to sleep.
This can turn into a very grave problem. Although some people may be able to fall asleep rather easily, they find that they wake up many times throughout the nightm which is yet another definition of insomnia.
If you have one or more of these symptoms, then you may be suffering from insomnia.
Other Signs That You May Have Insomnia
Although the most common symptoms are above, there are many more that point to another definition of insomnia.
There are symptoms that are much more severe as well, like:
- Behavior changes,
- Severe anxiety,
- And mood swings.
Conclusion
You do not have to have every single symptom to be diagnosed with insomnia, and if your symptoms are really severe, medication may be needed. This can include anti depressants to help you overcome the condition. If you are not sure, visiting your doctor can help to clear things up for you.
