When I’m looking for a good dentist in my area, there are always some obvious things for me to consider in making my selection. There are some general tips that anyone looking for a good dentist should follow.

First, you want to find and become acquainted with a good family dentist before any emergencies come up. Some of the best ways to find a good trustworthy dentist include, asking friends and relatives about their dentists, contacting the American Dental Association and asking them about good dentist in your area. Other methods include going to a local dental school and getting advice from them about the local dental practitioners. When I was trying to find a dentist in my area, I got a good referral from my relatives that live in my area.

It’s always a good idea either on your first visit, or even before, to sit down with your dentist and get to know him or her. Ask him or her about payment plans and schedules. Most dentists will assume it the responsibility of the patient to initiate the “payment” conversation. I had to ask the dentist in my area about payment schedules and expectations myself. If you are in the need of larger, abnormal dental work, and the payment for such work will vary from the normal payment schedule, it is important to “get it in writing” so that no unexpected fees will pop up when it comes time to pay.

I’m always looking for a dentist in my area that can offer a reasonable treatment plan. You should be cautious about a dentist who recommends an elaborate treatment plan. Dentists who are recommending these kinds of plans might be an indicator of a dentist who will “see” problems in your mouth that aren’t really there in order to get more from your insurance provider. This will only cause more problems and discomfort for you.

Research suggests certain questions that patients should ask themselves after visiting their dentist to determine the quality of their dentist’s services. They include:

  • How does my bit feel?
  • Is there anything irritating my gums?
  • Does the tooth that was worked on look like a tooth?
  • Does my tongue or dental floss catch on the tooth?
  • Did the dentist take the time to polish my fillings?
  • Do I feel pain when drinking hot or cold liquids?
  • Is there any debris still in my mouth from the procedure?
  • Did the dentist use a water spray to cool my tooth while drilling?

Lastly, when your dentist is recommending that some kind of extensive or elaborate dental work is needed, it is always good to get a second opinion. Remember that just because he or she is a dentist, it doesn’t mean that he or she is always right. When I had to have a root canal, I went to a dentist in my area that I didn’t normally see for a second opinion. This way I was sure that I wasn’t going to be wasting my time and money.
