Millions of Americans are suffering from depression

" I lost my job at a local iron manufacturing company in Savannah, Georgia, remembers Tommy, " sat in my car, and thought, 'How am I going to pay my bills?' 'How will I provide for my wife and kids?' " "I felt like I wanted to die! " Today, like many of us, Tommy was suffering from depression. This can happen to you too. Depression can be defined as being low in spirits. Tommy was able to lift his spirits and get back on his feet. He found another job and was able to provide for his family.

From time to time, we all may have been depressed at one time or another. We simply, have sad feelings because we are imperfect human beings. Can depression happen to you?

                                                  How It Can Affect You?

Most of the time, depression will sneak up on you and you will not notice it at all. Depression has been described as a "silent killer." It can put a lot of pain on your body without you knowing it. Some symptoms of depression may be sadness, pain, and suicidal thoughts. Depression can affect a person for many years. For example, the loss of a dear loved one can cause personal grief for a life time. So, depression can affect anyone. Millions of people are affected by depression, but what can you do?

                                               You Can Fight Depression

First, while trying to fight off depression, you should try to avoid being overly sad about anything. Also, try to find a very good support system to help you fight your depression. For instance, you can consult with family, friends, and your doctor. It is always good and beneficial to pray to God for help. He has informed us that we can throw all our burdens on him because he cares. Next, you can participate in recreational activities to reduce the stress that you may be experiencing. Do not be afraid to seek professional help. Make sure that when you receive advice, that it is from a reliable source. Remember that there are about five different types of depression -bioplar disorder, postpartum depression, dysthymia, seasonal effective, and major depression. Communicate with your doctor, and describe your symptoms to him or her. Also, voice your concerns and make sure your doctor is looking out for your best interest.
