Dermalogica Skin Care

Dermalogica skin care products are the result of over 20 years of research and development. Addressing the need for a lack of 'results driven' skin care products in the marketplace, Dermalogica turned the skin care industry's head by refusing to use synthetic fragrances and artificial products in it's products. By using alcohol, lanolin and mineral oil, cosmetic manufacturers were able to maintain lower costs. These ingredients were used, despite claims and known links to skin care problems.

Taking further positive steps to ensure the Dermalogica skin care range met with, and continued to be held in high regard, a research and training facility was introduced. The International Dermal Institute sought to develop and train all skin care therapists involved with the products. By insisting on this high level of training, Dermalogica could ensure that all customers could obtain professional consultations to determine the condition of, and subsequently improve the condition of their skin.

Training and developing skin care therapists in this way means that customers can be assured that the right Dermalogica skin care product is targeted at their specific skin concern. Dermalogica's commitment to the formulation of products that deliver, plus the education for all skin care therapists involved, separate the organisation from the usual subterfuge that influences the skin care industry.

The Dermalogica product line was formulated to avoid common ingredients that caused irritation and led ultimately to skin sensitisation. Dermalogica wanted a skin care line up that a therapist could 'prescribe' in the same way a doctor would prescribe medication. Creating products that met this criteria were initially developed - multi active toner, special cleansing gel, skin smoothing cream, dermal clay cleanser and active moist. These 'staple' products paved the way to become a class leading line up of moisturisers, toners and cleansers.

Using oily skin as an example, it is easy to see why one skin care product can't be successful at treating all types of skin disorder. Many sufferers of oily skin have a greater chance of experiencing acne. This is because oilier skin conditions provide an ideal breeding platform for the 90% of the bacterium responsible for acne related conditions.

Oily and acne skin conditions are some of the most alienating skin conditions. They cause frustration, irritation, physical and emotional scarring to sufferers. Acne affects all types of people and is not exclusive to teenagers. In the US alone, around 85% of people suffer with adult acne. Acne related skin conditions are therefore, one of the most common skin disorders in the United States.

Before going headlong into choosing a skin care treatment for oily and acne skin types, it's important to understand the root cause of the condition.

Oily skin is caused by sebum production. Sebum production is governed by the androgen hormone. This hormone is responsible for controlling the development and maintenance of musculine characteristics and estrogens. When functioning under normal circumstances, oil is created in the sebaceous gland, it then moves up through the hair follicle to the surface of the skin, where it then empties. When all is well, oils help lubricate skin, providing protection from the environment and maintaining a healthy balance.

Problems begin when the androgen hormone becomes imbalanced. This can happen during puberty, menopause or monthly cycles. An overproduction of oil is triggered, and this creates a greasy, oily appearance of the skin.

Oily skin makes a contribution to acne because where there is an overproduction of oil, the skin acts as a binder. This causes it to hold onto dead skin cells that should have have disappeared throughout the process of skin renewal. The follicle that releases the oil to the surface becomes restricted with oil and dead skin cells, this causes the skin follicle to be starved of oxygen. These conditions are ideal for the bacterium (P.acnes) to multiply. It's important to note that an acne skin condition can mean that the skin can produce up to 5 times more dead skin cells.

Thriving P.acne's can only multiply where there is no oxygen, the now restricted follicle will become aggravated, red, swollen and itchy. Here we have a typical acne condition.

Rather than supplementing irritation by directly using harsh spot treatments and medication, Dermalogica skin care products are designed around boosting the health of skin. Any harsh treatments that cause drying of the skin can actually initiate increased oil production, trying to compensate for the oil that has been removed. This can result in dehydrated, irritated and sensitised skin.

The production of blackheads is commonly associated with dirty skin. This is in fact incorrect, and causes many sufferers to overcleanse, leading to potentially even more oil production and irritation. The dark colour in blackheads is merely the by-product of a chemical reaction known as oxidation. It is very important to understand the type of your skin before you decide on a strategy to improve it.

Because each area of the skin is different, Dermalogica introduced a concept called face mapping.

Face mapping is a really easy to use guide that helps you to determine the type of your skin by zone. The diagram illustrates this.

Having accurately determined your skin type by zone, it is relatively easy to recommend a core of products that are matched to your type.

Consulting a dermatologist is a smart way to begin treating oily skin and acne. A professional, well trained therapist with an arsenal of debris removing (and non-inflammatory) products and tools is absolutely necessary to maintain skin health. Only a trained therapist can map your skin and advise you on how best to continue in a way that will both optimise and maintain a healthy skin condition. The use of the right skin care products in between visits to your therapist is an essential element in contributing positively to the look and feel of your skin.

  • Dry face skin? Don't let it age you.

If you have really dry skin, there are hundreds of dry skin creams available. And with colder weather just around the corner you're going to want to make sure you pick the right one. But before you start paging through the dry skin reviews you should make sure that your 'dry face skin' isn't just a build up of debris. If you haven't tried exfoliating in a while, this may be the case.  Once you've exfoliated, your skin is prepared to soak up all the benefits of a good quality moisturiser. You may want to consider two class leaders from Dermalogica. The first, Skin Smoothing Cream is a medium weight cream packed with soothing botanicals and antioxidant vitamins. Just the job for smoothing out those fine lines. The second, Intensive Moisture Balance is an ultra rich phytonutrient moisturiser which is particularly suited to dry and prematurely aging skin. This product strengthens the skins lipid barrier to help prevent moisture loss.As a precautionary measure you should do your best to drink at least 2.5 litres of water a day, herbal teas can be included in this allowance if you don't fancy bottled water. The post below is useful in that it describes the causes risks and other factors asscociated with dry skin. The information is a bang up to date account written by medical proffessionals. If you've had the condition for a long time and nothing seems to work, this is a valuable resource. Dry skin Dry skin — Comprehensive overview covers causes, treatments and tips for dry skin care. • Combination skin - Oil control

If you have an oily T zone and dry skin elsewhere, you are likely to possess combination skin. In case you didn't know, the 'T zone' is your nose, forehead and chin area. Once you've identified it, the best way to deal with this type of skin is to make sure that you choose non-comedogenic products (also known as non-occlusive). This means products that don't encourage acne and oiliness because they are, well... oil free. But care must be taken. Just because a product is non-comedogenic it may not produce the same pore unclogging results for every skin type. Why? Because the skin's natural oils can determine the effect a product has on the skin. If your skin is oily, then a non-comedogenic product is very likely to help keep your pores clear. But dry skin has a different requirement, because it produces less oil. Sufferers of oily skin, shouldn't be reluctant to use a moisturiser because this can cause irritation. Instead try an ultra lightweight product such as Dermalogica Oil Control Lotion. Oil control lotion helps to regulate oil production on the surface of the skin, it also has mattifying properties (reducing shine). Permalink | Leave a comment  » - 13 hours ago

  • Don’t let a skin reaction ruin your cool

Allergic reactions to skin care products are best avoided. The ‘freshly slapped backside look’ will usually occur just before an important date or meeting, leaving you feeling frustrated and embarrassed. Whilst you can't tell whether your skin will throw a wobbly or not, a little forward thinking could well save the day. One strategy is to apply the product well before you venture out into society. Gently rubbing your new 'potion' onto some inconspicuous area like the elbow, you'll see if any eruptions are likely. Usually they'll take place within a couple of days and will manifest themselves in a variety of different ways. If you must put something on your face, try somewhere that your hair can hide if the worst happens.Reacting to skin care products is quite common. Rather than letting your face become a proving ground for all and sundry, we'd suggest that you visit a professional skin care therapist (preferably a Dermalogica one:)). Having conducted a thorough examination of the skin, you can be sure that any products recommended will be suitable your individual skin type. Permalink | Leave a comment  » - 4 days ago

  • Double cleanse your way to an oil free complexion

If you've ever wondered what steps you can take to make your cleansing regimen more effective? It might be a good idea to consider double cleansing. Obviously this means cleansing twice, so do you really need to bother? Well if you've done your homework, you'll know that over exfoliating when you have an oily complexion can cause the skin to produce even more oil in order to compensate. Not good if oil is the very thing you are looking to reduce. Double cleansing is a gentle process that softens debris and build up, leaving the skin well prepared for the main cleansing process.Make up, lipstick, SPF and environmental pollutants can be difficult to remove (especially the waterproof ones) without being harsh on the skin. So what should a pre cleansing product contain then? Well, (amongst other things) oil. Olive oil, apricot kernal and other nut and seed based oils are particularly effective. Rice bran is another. Oils help to soften and liquefy sebum and oil based debris on the skins surface. So if you'd like to take yourself to a new level of clean, give the double cleanse routine a go.Whilst we're on the subject of cleansing, check out the Dermalogica video on the science of skincare, and why the ph value of your cleanser is particularly important. • Avoid ruining your skin's natural moisture balance

In the colder months using a cleanser that doesn't strip moisture or cause drying of the skin is essential. Naturally, it's still important to thoroughly remove impurities and debris effecitvely. For gentle exfoliation you may consider applying Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel with the recommended face brush. As well as providing gentle exfoliation, this can actualy make your choice of cleanser go a lot further.
