The Truth About Doing Pilates Workouts At Home

Here's the truth which many pilates instructors don't want to admit. Even without the corrective cues we give, without the specialized exercises we give to you, without the full hour we generally teach sessions/classes...even without all of these things, you can still benefit in a big way from practicing pilates at home on your own.

Before I continue, I'll tell you that I am a certified pilates instructor.  I've been teaching a little under 4 years and I love getting people started in pilates.  Some people enjoy being taught by another person, while others like to exercise in private. I understand that and try to help everyone figure out what works for them.  Even so...I am guilty of telling people some of the following when they come to me for advice on starting an at home pilates program:

  • You can easily hurt yourself without the watchful eye of a trained instructor.
  • You might do exercises that aren't meant for your body or a specific issue you have.
  • You won't do the exercises as correctly as you will in a class led by an instructor.
  • You will not stay motivated enough to be consistent and see results.

Do any of these sound familiar? Well, the truth is all of them are true to some extent. But like any other activity you do, knowing these risks up front will make you more aware of them and able to pay attention to the details of your home pilates program...and then, hopefully, avoid these issues.

So, what do you need then to make sure you are starting safely, will get a good workout, and will stay motivated and see results? Well, it is my hope that I can point you in a few directions, so you do stay safe and see results (cuz that's why you're doing this, right?)!

  1. Learn the Basics
  2. Practice the Basics & Fundamentals for 2 weeks (at least)
  3. Go to even 1 mat class per month to get corrected a little bit.
  4. Find new Pilates workouts - there are a ton of great ones online and their are tons of videos.
  5. Come here, read reviews, my pilates beginner tips and send me your questions, let me test something out before you spend your money.
