Design A Tattoo
66Here is a brief overview of the process taken to design my shoulder tattoo.
Back in college, I drew a design for this tattoo and only recently (months after getting the tattoo) did I come across the original sketch. If I happen to scan it, I will post it here.
Here is the final product on Renaissance:
So, I wanted this image of a shark and a dolphin forming a circular image.
Think duality of nature. Think good and evil. Think intelligence and strength. Get the idea? That, and I grew up living alongside the ocean, surfing, etc. Plus, I wanted something unique. OK? OK.
So, I went online and found some images that would help me to develop the template. I found the following:
I used Adobe Photoshop to greyscale the images, crop them, resize them, slice them up, and arrange them as needed.
After correcting the image as needed, I created a shadow layer of the image, retaining the originals for reference.
In a new layer on top of the shadow image, I drew my blackwork designs, trying to take into account the physical features of the animals (eyes, gills, etc.) as well as relative shadowing.
I removed (hid) the shadow layer.
Below is my final design, as sent to my tattoo artist (he was my roommate in college, an art major, who ended up opening his own tattoo studio) for clean-up and rework.
Following my design, is the version my tattoo artist sent back.
You may also note that the artist's design is NOT the design that ultimately ended up on my shoulder. When I showed up, he kept looking at the design and decided that it just wasn't right... he said that the lines were too thin, making them more feminine in nature. He reworked the entire design to give it a more Polynesian-inspired look with fatter, more masculine, lines. I think he did a nice job of keeping the original concept for the design intact.

Thank you, becauseilive!
Great article. Very creative approach on your tattoo design. I enjoyed seeing all the transformations you made to the design through in photoshop. Thumbs Up!
Thanks, rkat!
You can get some really good ideas from Tattoo My brain.
Take a quick look at what they did fr me. http://watch-dogreviews.com/tattoomybrain.html
Right on. I am very impressed. I love the tattoo you created and if I saw it in a parlor I would probably consider it for myself.
I used an image I found online to help create a simple black lined horoscopic cancer sign that I edited to make a fluid link chain like bracelet for my left wrist. Had the work done over a year ago and i prefer this one over my first tattoo because I created it as apposed to the sunflower on my ankle that was taken out of a gardening book.
Thanks, Sunstreeks!
Very cool how you showed the tattoo design from beginning to end!
Truly the sign of a good artist. I glad you had the good sense to go along with him. You got something good out of it.
This tattoo is as beautiful as the effort that went into making it was extensive. I am impressed (&, no, I am not tattooed & will never be such).

Now THAT is an awesome tattoo, especially the story behind it (duality of nature, etc.) I love how you showed where you got the idea from, and then how you edited it in Photoshop to meet your needs. This is actually a really good hub :)
