Designing A Brand New Home...part 1
65Japanese toilet training for kids (with English subtitles)
The toilet
Not everybody, wants to buy a home already built for them. Some people would like to engage in the tasking endeavour of designing their very own, unique home. For those people, I am providing a series of articles that I hope will assist you in the process of certain features you choose for your new home. This first article is dedicated to the toilet.
Most people don't even know that they have various options to choose from when it comes to the design of their toilet. Most places I go to (here in America) have the same old design, which is this:
But I just wanted to let you know that there are other design options, and the following are a collection of photos I have compiled.
Squat Toilets
Proponents of squat toilets argue that:
- It is less expensive and easier to clean and maintain.[1]
- It does not involve any contact between the buttocks and a potentially unsanitary surface.[2]
- The lack of water in the bowl avoids the problem of splashing.
- Squatting might help to build the required pressure more comfortably and quickly.[3]
- Squatting makes elimination faster, easier and more complete.[4]
- Elimination in squatting posture protects the nerves that control the prostate, bladder and uterus from becoming stretched and damaged.[5]
- Squatting relaxes the puborectalis muscle which normally chokes the rectum in order to maintain continence.[6]
- Squatting securely seals the ileocecal valve, between the colon and the small intestine. In the conventional sitting position, this valve is unsupported and often leaks during evacuation.[7]
- For pregnant women, squatting avoids pressure on the uterus when using the toilet. Daily squatting helps prepare the mother-to-be for a more natural delivery.[8]
- Squatting may reduce the occurrence or severity of hemorrhoids[9][10] and possibly other colorectal disorders such as diverticulosis[11] and appendicitis.[12]
The Bidet
The next category of toilets is the Bidet. Originally, it was not a toilet, but a structure built beside the toilet that was used to wash your genitals, inner buttocks, and anus. It has since been integrated into the actual toilet as a spout/nozzle that sprays water after you flush your waste product. Germaphobes, who don't like the idea of touching their private parts sometimes prefer this method to toilet tissue, while others use it in addition to toilet tissue.
A history of the bidet can be found on Wikipedia.
And finally, we have the urinal...
Exclusively used as a male urination repository. It is commonly found in more developed nations like Europe, the United States and Japan. People have found creative ways to design them as well.

Interesting hub! I've heard of the squat toilet, but never actually saw one. Might be difficult to use for those with knee problems :o)
I just built a house myself, and it was eye-opening to see how many choices there are in toilets!
