Personalizing your Bedroom

No room in the home can be more difficult to design than a bedroom. First and foremost, the bedroom has a function to provide the user a good night's rest. But a bedroom is for more than just sleeping; it is a place to recharge, relax, prepare ourselves for the world every day, and at times, have a little fun in the process.

So, how do you create a functional room to accommodate all of these daily tasks? The creation of a personal and intimate bedroom requires a certain flight of fancy, for this is your sanctuary and should incorporate your personal vision.

For some, the romantic illusion is conjured by an air of rustic simplicity evoked by attic bedrooms tucked under snug eaves or the allure of the Orient with its rich tapestries, sumptuous oriental rugs, tented boudoirs and magic carpet rides.

First things first:

It is time rid yourself of the infamous and overpowering overhead light.

  • Exchange for the soft glow of bedside lamps, cove lighting and glittering chandeliers.
  • If you really want to outdo yourself, intimacy is most in favor when the sun sets below the horizon and open fires and candlelight are seen reflecting in sparkling mirrors, providing a most evocative mood of all.

Color Your Room

Color is a thing of magic that when carried across a room with subtle strokes of brilliance, can create your hearts one true desire - for your bedroom that is. Choose them wisely.

  • The sky and ocean brings us blue, 'darkness made visible,' the pale blue-gray of dawn, the translucent azure of island waters, the deep blues of impending storms, that magical moment in the evening when the very air we breathe takes on this celestial shade.

  • The golden glows of sunset's lights tell countless tales of flaxen-haired heroines in creamy lace gowns. Amber gleams bursting through darkness provide warmth and intimacy through winters most dreary days.

  • Roses are red, violets are simply unnecessary when delicate hues of Springs's pale pink wild roses meander through velvety hybrids of passionate reds. No, one, other color can boast red's natural aura of intimacy and romance.

Add Plush Fabrics

Sensuous and lavish fabrics provide the raw materials of sumptuous bedrooms providing the finishing touches needed to conjure romantic visions.

  • Lace is by birth right the most romantic of all fabrics and makes for an air of unabashed luxury when paired with cream colored silks.
  • Thick tapestries with rich embroidery add warmth and opulence to the room. Place them underfoot with a golden Aubusson carpets or drape them all around with the lighter silk embroidered fabrics spangled with gold and silver.
  • Luxurious, shag area rugs add warmth and texture to the room.
  • Velvet, with such a fine hand piled high, evokes us to touch and caress where others may not. It is the fabric of kings and queens and demands nothing less.

Magic mirror on the wall - who's the fairest room of all?

As the final touch to your now most sensuous room, sprinkle glittering mirrors around generously; for they, who spread love's candle glow throughout the room, create the sparkle that sets time apart.

Now that your bedroom has been reinvigorated, take a moment to relax and enjoy your space and the flight of fancy the room creates.

I have that exact bed that you have in the pictures. Thanks for the great advice. I moved into a new house in August and haven't done anything to my room. It's got a bed and a small dresser:) Not because I'm lazy but because I just don't know what to so with it. But that's about to change thanks to you!
