On the Road

After completing all of our business in Oregon (including having a new transmission  put in our truck) we headed for Montana. We stopped for a few days in White Sulfur Springs, which was actually a bit of a disappointment. The description of the RV Park in our books was not quite what we found, an experience we would soon learn was pretty typical.

We did however have an interesting and beautiful drive from White Sulphur Springs to Yellowstone. The Montana landscape is as beautiful and wide open as I had imagined it would be.

Highway 89, Montana, on our way to Yellowstone

We ran into a cattle drive (being a city kid who grew up on “Rawhide” this was quite exciting for me!)

We even saw where the Antelope play!

We had reservations at one of the RV parks inside of Yellowstone.

Once we got to Yellowstone, we started seeing the wildlife right away.  We saw lots of elk, and buffalo. I was getting quite excited about the possibility of seeing bears. For some reason I have always been obsessed with seeing real live bears in the wild. I was hoping we might even see some at our campground!

Breakdown, again!

Unfortunately, we didn’t quite make it to our campsite. We blew our transmission (again!) climbing the last hill to our campground, and had to regroup and come up with a new plan.

We had our truck towed to the closest town with a transmission shop, and our rig towed to an RV Park just outside of Yellowstone in the little town of Gardiner. It would have been closer to tow to our reserved campsite, but there is a time limit on how long you can stay, and not knowing when we would have our truck up and running we didn't want to risk the problem of overstaying the limit.

We had planned on staying in Yellowstone for one week. We ended up sending our transmission back to Oregon for repair from the original shop, which took one month. (so glad we didn't drop the RV off at the campsite, what a mess that would have been!) I must say, if we were going to be stranded, this was a great place to have it happen! Sure glad it didn’t happen back in Sulfur Springs!

We had a rental car, and toured Yellowstone almost on a daily basis. We would pack our lunch in the morning, and head out to explore. Often we would not return home until way after sunset.

There is so much to see in Yellowstone! I was so glad we had a month instead of one week.
