An Internet Merchant Account is an online merchant account. It is a bank account that allows an online retailer to accept debit and credit card payments. It acts as a contractual agreement with the payment processor, the merchant bank and the merchant. With an Internet Merchant Account, your retail website is able to accept transactions by electronic payment methods. It is also referred to as EDI, or Electronic Data Interchange. Because online shopping and banking have become so popular, Internet payment methods and systems have also grown in popularity.

In the beginning of internet shopping, customers were fearful of using their cards online to make payments and purchases. The perceived risk of fraud kept them from venturing into the internet stores. In 2006, according to studies performed on the general public in the United Kingdom, 26% of people chose to shop online; today 54% feel that online shopping is completely safe, but 30% still choose not to shop on the internet.

If you are looking for payment systems for your Internet Merchant Account, your options are many. There are regular credit cards and debit cards , digital wallets, and e-checks just to name a few. You also have the option of using payment service providers such as Paypal and WorldPay as a business solution for online payment processing. A digital wallet is software that is usually client-side. The client will fill in their personal data, such as name, address and phone number; and will also add their credit card information, expiration date and security code as well. The digital wallet is an accepted and safe means of paying at most every internet retailer. Although the digital wallet is typically client-side, server-side wallets are becoming more popular. An electronic check, or e-check, is simply an authorization to electronically draw a payment from your checking account. You simply give your name and address information along with the bank routing number and your account number.

There are a number of products and services available for your business needs. Check out all the information, and make sure you understand fully all the terms and conditions and your business could grow substantially with an Internet Merchant Account.
