Diabetic Socks

Diabetic socks or diabetes socks can be very beneficial to people who suffer from foot ailments caused by the complications of diabetes.  Diabetes is a disease that results in a elevated blood sugar level.  This causes complications in the body particularly circulation problems in the hands and feet.  For this reason it is very important that a person with diabetes take very good care of their feet.  If you are a big person the extra large diabetic socks would be important because you don't want to constrict the circulation in the feet.

There are styles to fit almost any needs a person might have.  Originally there were only a few styles available but now there are diabetic socks for men and women's diabetic socks.  You no longer have to give up fashion in order to wear socks that will fit your feet properly and provide the care you need.

People who are suffering from diabetes generally have tender feet and poor circulation in the foot and lower leg.  For this reason it is important to wear the proper diabetic footwear.  Socks and shoes should be non-binding giving plenty of room for toe movement.  They also should be constructed of natural materials that will "breathe" thus letting sweat be removed from your feet.

High glucose, or blood sugar, levels in the body can result in two problems in the foot.  One is nerve damage and the other is poor circulation.  If you have nerve damage you are not going to be able to feel small irritations that can result in major problems.  Many diabetics find the seam and constricting band on regular socks very irritating.  Since there may be reduced feeling in the foot these small irritations can result in open sores and infections without the diabetic even knowing it is occuring.

Quality diabetic socks are constructed out of natural materials with fibers that act as wicks to remove the moisture from the skin and let it evaporate in the air.  This keeps the chance of infection lower.  Good diabetic socks also often times have a anti-biotic action because of special fibers that are woven in.  Foot problems are very important to a person with diabetes and everything possible should be done to alleviate them.

Do You Have Diabetes?

The following are symptoms of diabetes.  If you have any of these visit your doctor immediately for a check up.

  • Inability to feel pain along with numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
  • Poor circulation resulting in ulcers and infections in the foot
  • Eye problems resulting in blurred vision
  • Increased thirst and hunger
  • Dry mouth and frequent urination
  • Unexplained weight gain or weight loss

Diabetes can be present for a long time before any of these symptoms show up so you should be aware of any of these changes and contact your doctor immediately.
