Guidelines For A Healthy Diabetic Diet

Diabetes is a condition in which the body cannot make insulin in sufficient quantities. Insulin is the hormone that controls the level of glucose in the blood. In the absence of proper insulin production, blood glucose levels soar beyond control. High levels of sugar in the blood can lead to a number of health problems like nephropathy, retinopathy, neuropathy, eye problems, tooth decay, importance, infertility etc. The only way a diabetic patient can avoid one or all of these problems is to bring blood sugar levels under strict, long-term control. To do this, a diabetic has to adopt a healthy diabetic diet.

Eating sensibly means paying particular attention to the quantity as well as the quality of food. Taking in sufficient amounts of the right nutrients is an important part of managing diabetes. A healthy diabetic diet relies on wise food choices. At the same time, the diabetic diet should be flexible enough to accommodate any kind of lifestyle.

Experts suggest that a diabetic diet must be based on:

  • Limiting the intake of sweets
  • Careful control of carbohydrate intake
  • Sufficient fiber intake
  • Controlled fat intake
  • Balanced intake of the right fruits and vegetables
  • Healthy eating patterns

Meal planning is an important part of a healthy diabetic diet. While there are no food groups that have to be totally avoided from a diabetic diet, it is advisable to keep away from processed convenience foods. The majority of your food intake must consist of fresh produce, whole grains and fibrous foods. You must take in vegetables half cooked or raw. Aim for 2-4 servings of vegetables per day. Meat and dairy should be taken in conservatively. Use low-fat skimmed milk. The intake of fat must be limited, although not completely eliminated. One small bowl of almonds or cashew nut is also permitted.

Portion control is important. A diabetic diet may include brown rice, brown bread, cereal and beans in limited quantities. Complex carbohydrates release sugar slowly into the bloodstream and have comparatively high amounts of fiber in them. One serving of fruit per meal is recommended.

The idea is to manage your sugar as effectively as possible. Taking in lots of fiber is one way to do this. Unfortunately, getting sufficient quantities of fiber from food may be a little difficult. Which is the reason why many diabetic patients opt for healthy, all natural fiber supplements. Fiber regulates blood sugar levels and keeps hunger under control. There are some special kinds of plant based fiber that can bring about effective weight loss and sugar control even when there are no changes made to eating patterns.
