When owning a dog with diabetes, it is important to know what foods are good for your dog. You want to find food that is natural and well-balanced. Be careful of just grabbing the dog food that is labeled "diabetic dog food", be sure you check the label. You want to avoid food that is processed because they have little nutritional value. They also contain a large amount of sodium and carbohydrates. You want to feed your dog a diet that is low in carbohydrates. Keep in mind when determining what type of food you will feed your diabetic dog that unprocessed food is the best route.
An organic food diet is great for dogs with diabetes. This is food that is considered "safe for human consumption." You should look primarily for moist canned food that are low in sodium and carbs because they will aid in good kidney health. This is not to say that you should avoid all dry dog food, a litte dry food is fine as long as it has low carbs and is high in protein and vegetables. Some of the most popular brands of these healthy foods are: Innova, Pedigree, and Science Diet. These foods have several benefits for your dog: healthier overall, his/her coat will be shinier, skin issues should be eliminated, and your dog will have more energy.
Once you have found the correct food, keep in mind that portions are a large factor in providing the best care for your diabetic dog. Many dogs are fed one large meal a day. While other dogs are even given unlimited amounts of food thoughout the day which can result in your dog gaining an excessive amount of weight. However, diabetic dogs should be fed 2-3 small meals a day to keep your dog's sugar levels regulated throughout the day. Keep in mind that correctly feeding your diabetic dog is one step in the right direction. Exercise is a must!
