Welcome to Renal Cookbooks and Dialysis Recipes, here we'll be talking about the dietary restrictions placed on dialysis patients, and how they can still enjoy good food despite the restrictions.

First, a little about me: My name is Stu, and i know all about dialysis diet restrictions. Through two stints on dialysis, totaling over seven years, I've pushed the boundaries of the renal diet in more ways that you could count, and paid the price over and over again.

The one lesson I learned was that although that packet of crisps might look good now, it's just not worth the pain that it brings: the shakes, the heart palpitations, and the rushed trip to the emergency room on boxing day with a potassium 25% higher than the potential lethal level.

So I gradually came to the conclusion that following the renal diet more strictly, whilst being a bit boring, actually had me feeling better and coping much more happily with the day to day drudgery of being a dialysis patient.

There are some great resources available now to help dialysis patients enjoy their food more than ever before. One of the books that I found had the greatest benefit to me was& Cooking for David: A Culinary Dialysis Cookbook by Sarah Colman and Dorothy Gordon.

The first great thing about this book is that it's ring bound, which means that it will sit flat on the bench whilst you're cooking (It also comes with a handy stand included free as well!). I'm one messy dude in the kitchen, so this was a god-send!

The book consists of around 150 recipes, each with a complete nutritional analysis including Sodium Potassium Phosphorus Protein Fat Calories Carbohydrates and Cholesterol.

Also, it comes with lists of high and low Sodium, Potassium and Phosphorus food lists...not just what you can't eat, but also what you can!

I can'r recommend Cooking for David: A Culinary Dialysis Cookbook highly enough, and suggest that it's a great buy for anyone on dialysis, or anyone who knows or cooks for a dialysis patient.
