Selling a Member of the Family
54Selling a Family Member
Do you own a horse? If you do, you probably own some tack as well. Or at least you did.
In this time of high fuel cost, sky-rocketing food prices and every thing else that trickles down, owning a horse is becoming a luxury that alot of people just can't afford. If you're like me your horse just isn't an animal, it's part of the family. I know several people that have had to sell their horses because of high feed prices. They can't afford to feed their children and their horses. and the horse will always lose this battle. Some people have sold their saddle and a lot of their tack just to keep this member of the family with them.
I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. We have 70 acres to run a few mama cows on with 15 acres fenced off for 2 horses. Our grass is good and we already have our winter supply of hay. Our calf crop makes our land payment, (most of the time). But like kids, horse require upkeep too. There are the vaccinations, worming, farrier charges, not to mention the unexpected trips to the vet.
My husband and I both work 40 hour a week jobs and take care of the farm. I also have an on-line tack store that I am trying to start, Diamond C Tack & Supply. We have a son in college and a daughter in high school. Neither one is cheap. But I do know I would find another job to keep my horse with me. If I did sell them, I couldn't afford the therapy sessions. They keep me grounded and sane.
But don't get me wrong. I'm not bad- mouthing people who have had to sell their horses. I actually feel sorry for them. I could not imagine having to sell my babies. But I know with the economy the way it is, there is no getting around it. You have to eat. You have to pay your bills. And in the meantime, somebodies family member is getting sold Saturday night at the horse sale.
Do everything you can to keep your horses. Ask for donations from you local animal shelter or humane society. Trade your extra time for hay at the feed store. If nothing else, pray. I know I thank God for all my blessings, including my horses.
