Diamond Doves
71 Diamond doves are not as common to see in pet shops than other related species. They are however becoming more and more popular as pets due to many care and appearance factors. Many people describe them as beginner birds while many others describe them as difficult birds. This is all up to you and it does depend how tolerant you are with the daily care of animals. They are commonly found in Australia and some parts of New Guinea were they are native to.There are also a few feral colonies in the US.These birds need proper diets, water, caging, handling, breeding(if wanted).
Housing
Housing them is fairly easy.A large parrot cage without all those toys will do well.Provide a good amount of perches of different sizes to prevent arthritis.Remove the metal grate as these usually entangle their feet.Provide aa good sized nest box for a pair to use to lay eggs or sleep in.You may also just use a bowl nest.If you wish to keep more than one,a 3 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet is ideal for every pair. That means 27 cubic feet for every pair.If you want the birds as household pets, use smaller caging that acclimates them to being more captive.
Feeding
A good seed diet will usually work.Do not bother even having to buy a seed bowl as they do not prefer these.Scatter the seeds on the cage floor so they may search for it.You could also use pigeon food as these have the correct nutrients for doves. If you decide you want to use the seed diet, use grounded grit.Occasinally provide some grass to snack on and for fun.If you have a large aviary with "messy" birds, you may use the diamond doves to clean up after the dropped seeds.Occasionally check on the amount of seeds that fall.If there is no food on the floor, throw some seeds on the floor to keep them alive.A good diet is quail feed with some bird seeds.Add a few ground up peppers to deter rodents.Birds cannot taste the peppers so they never do mind. The best diet is a varied diet of all these and a main diet of pelletted foods. If you do provide pelletts, give extra water because they are dry.
Handling
Birds get extremely stressed out when they are handled incorrectly.Handling correctly also helps them gain trust. There are different ways, but this allows for a free hand.Slip the legs into your middle and index fingers and wrap the rest of its body to support it and disable flight.
Breeding
Breeding is very easy.As long as you have a bonded pair and a nest box, they will breed by themselves. As soon as the young chick is fledged seperate to socialize it to humans.Try not to bother them, but we all have those urges to do so,so only check on them when the both parents are out.As easy as that.Sorry I had no pictures.
