Gen 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

What we see in this passage of scripture is not the devil making them eat the fruit. He merely put the thought out to them to eat but they made the decision to eat themselves. The devil cannot force us or anyone else to do something.

Albeit, there are some who have given control of their bodies over to Satan. Once control is given to Satan then Satan can do with it whatever he wants.

Geraldine

The phrase, "The Devil made me do it," was made popular by a comedian named Flip Wilson who had his own show on television during the 70's. One of his signature characters was named Geraldine. It was while he played this character that the phrase became so popular.

His real name is Clerow Wilson Jr. He was born in Jersey City, New Jersey on December 8, 1933. His show debuted on NBC in 1970. He appeared previously on the Ed Sullivan show, was a regular at the Apollo Theater, and was a favorite guest on The Tonight Show and Laugh-In.

Sadly he passed away on Novemebr 28,1998.

The voice of the Devil.

All Bibles or sacred codes have been the causes of the following Errors.

1. That Man has two real existing principles Viz: a Body & a Soul.

2. That Energy, call'd Evil, is alone from the Body, & that Reason, call'd Good, is alone from the Soul.

3. That God will torment Man in Eternity for following his Energies.

But the following Contraries to these are True

1. Man has no Body distinct from his Soul for that call'd Body is a portion of Soul discern'd by the five Senses, the chief inlets of Soul in this age

2. Energy is the only life and is from the Body and Reason is the bound or outward circumference of Energy.

3 Energy is Eternal Delight.

"The devil made me buy that dress." I listened to that album back in the early 70s and laughed myself silly. On a more serious note however, I agree with you in that the devil can never cause us to do anything. He will place the temptation based upon our fleshly weakness, but the choice to give in to or sidestep the temptation is ours. The devil really is a wandering beast looking for souls to devour. We must always rely on God's protection and sovereignty. Blessings to you.

I very firmly believe in free will, even when it doesn't work to my advantage where others are concerned.

What CJStone says (above comment) resonates with my beliefs as well. Everything is energy. It's been proven with quantum physics, so that's not up for debate. How we use that energy is up to us (free will). I don't think there's an actual guy with horns and clovened hooves, I think 'the devil' is negative energy that we can choose to welcome into our lives or not.

So I guess SirDent, that I am agreeing with you on this one! :)

P.S. I had forgotten all about Flip Wilson! Used to like watching his show.

Great hub, SirDent!

WE TEND TO BLAME THE DEVIL FOR ALL BAD THINGS THAT WE SEEM TO DO,, WHEN ARE SOME GOING TO TAKE AND PUT THE BLAME ON THEMSELVES WHEN THEY MESS UP

You are right Silly. We do tend to blame the devil for our own actions. This doesn;t excuse the devil. He was found with iniquity in his heart.

That is a good point sirdent. I believe we all have free will to make good or bad decisions. However, God can help us to learn about the right ones. I still like this hub.
