Did the single most devastating crisis in your life make you a better person??
60The most devastating event in my life occurred ten years ago when I got divorced. It was complicated further because I had two small boys and was suffering from clinical depression.
Because I am the kind of person who is always analyzing and trying to figure out how to correct my mistakes, I knew I needed help in trying to work through my marital failures. It is very easy to put all of the blame on the other person but I did not think that doing this would be beneficial to my success.
First and foremost was the recognition that I made several mistakes. I believe that this is fifty percent of correcting any problem. After I recognized that I had to correct my problems I contacted a therapist.
My therapist diagnosed my clinical depression and I started working through the depression with psychotherapy. Over the course of the next year I slowly worked my way out of the depression and was able to take a long hard look at how I contributed to the problems in my marriage.
I believe that after facing the problems, I was able to better myself and develop myself from the inside out. I then grew to love myself, my life and my children. My life opened up to learning how to love again which is what happened when I met a man who would then become my husband.
I believe that if it were not for the devastating effects of my divorce I would not be the happy and healthy person that I am today.

As a long time Life Skills Coach, and a huge fan of the psychologist who saved my life after a bitter break up years ago, I am always encouraged when I hear of someone else who was able to slip from under the black cloud of depression and move successfully into the sunshine!!
