Yuccadoo

Learning

I've been interested in playing Didgeridoos for a few years now and last Sat. I got to take a free beginners class offered by LA OUTBACK. I never realized just how much muscle control you need in your cheeks, your tongue, your jaw and your diaphragm. It looks so easy but it's not. Honestly I was the worst one in class, but mostly the rest of them have been practicing a lot to get where they are.

Anyway, here's the new didge my boyfriend bought. We've both made some ourselves too.

He's made didgeridoos from PVC pipe and yucca stalks.

I made mine out of two snake gourds glued together.

The ones from Australia are made from hollow eucalyptus limbs that were eaten out by termites. I've also seen some made out of agave and others made out of bamboo. The longer the tube, the lower the sound.

Yuccadoo

Right now we are in the process of making a new didgeridoo out of a yucca stalk. First my boyfriend cut it open lengthwise. Then we dug out the pith with knives and scrapers. Then he glued it back together. Then he coated the interior with Envirotex. Then I painted the artwork on it.

He just put the second coat of Envirotex on the outside, and as soon as it dries, I'll be able to share photos with all of you.

The first video really helped me understand the proper way to play the didge, until now I had really only been using the droning bass tone for the most part.
