87DirecTV Internet - Is it as Good as Cable?
I was excited about moving my family to our new home in the country. Twenty-seven acres with a man-made lake, surrounded by beautiful, lush meadows and cool, shady forests. It was paradise on earth.
I didn’t care that it was 37 miles to the nearest town. Coming home to relax on the front porch and watching the sun set behind the distant mountains was worth having to travel for groceries.
What I did care about was the fact the cable company service ended three miles from our driveway and no amount of nagging, complaining, threatening or pleading was successful in persuading them to extend their service area.
I began looking at alternatives. Since we had a completely unobstructed view to the southern sky, satellite TV was the obvious choice, but what about our internet connection?
I contacted DirecTV and was pleased to learn that while they didn’t provide satellite internet service, they had partnerships with several major companies who did.
DirecTV gave me something the cable company couldn’t. They gave me choices.
I learned DirecTV’s partners were well-known, long-established internet access providers, like AT&T, Verizon, Qwest, Earthlink and Wildblue.
A short visit to each website allowed me to quickly determine which providers offered service in my area. We were fortunate to be in a part of the country serviced by all the DirecTV partners.

Qwest, AT&T and Verizon are easily recognizable as leaders in the telephone industry, but I didn’t realize they had added internet access to their list of available services.
They offer multiple methods of access, ranging from traditional and accelerated dial-up to DSL and satellite internet. AT&T has packages that start as low as $20 a month. What a refreshing difference from cable prices! Verizon uses existing copper telephone lines to give its customers rapid internet access, 20 times faster than traditional dial-up.
You don’t need a second line and you can be on the phone and the computer at the same time. Qwest is widely known in the western half of the country where their customer base is the largest. If you choose their home phone service as well, your internet access price will never go up. They call it ‘priced for life’.
I also took a close look at Earthlink and Wildblue. Both are huge contenders in the arena of internet access. Earthlink has been doing it for over 10 years and as their customer you can opt for access to the World Wide Web via cable line, DSL, satellite or wi-fi. They now offer phone service as well.
Though all were great companies with a lot to offer their customers, my personal favorite was Wildblue. Even though they require a 12 month commitment and impose strict penalties for breaking the contact, I was impressed by the customer testimonials on their website.
Available in all the lower 48 states, some of their clients live in even more remote areas than we do. One guy lives on a mountain in Colorado at an elevation of over 11,000 feet! Satellite packages are affordable, starting at just under $50 a month.
DirecTV has made certain they have reliable, well-known partners capable of providing the best and most versatile internet access to their broad and varied subscriber base.
I found the perfect one for my family. There’s a perfect provider for your family too. DirecTV makes it easy to have your satellite TV AND internet access. We said goodbye forever to cable and their constant rate hikes and couldn’t be happier.
Hope that helps you make a decision.
