Dirty Hairy, make my day

Dirty hair has no style
You can do all you want. Cut, comb, brush, apply wax or gel.
But if it ain't clean, none will work well.
So, before we even start thinking about our hairstyle, we should make sure that our hair is in good condition. So, off we go to drugstore or supermarket, confident that we're going to look and be our best. And this is where the hair-raising story begins...
The Shampoo Sham
There you are, shelf after shelf in front of you. Brand after brand and each offering a variety of shampoos. What to do, how to choose? Should the shampoo contain aloe vera or almond? I've investigated a number of official websites to look at the offering. A normal human being doesn't want to know, really.
You see, I've got pretty normal, dark, curly hair which is now cut short. Nothing out of the ordinary. So it shouldn't be too difficult to pick the right shampoo, should it? Let's have a look.
Pantene Pro V
For hair that shines from root to tip you need the right kind of shampoo. You need cleaning that helps remove buildup while leaving hair with shine. Pro-V Classic Care Shampoo delivers beautifully.
Brilliant, all-day shine can be yours. Pro-V Ice Shine Shampoo gently transforms dull, lifeless hair by removing dirt, oil and styling products.
Hair shines with the look of health: it can be soft, smooth and extremely shiny. That's the beauty of Pantene Pro-V Moisture Renewal Shampoo. Pro-vitamins help provide protection from styling damage and split ends due to combing.
Pure shine reflects pure beauty. Our Pro-V Purifying Shampoo cleanses to remove built-up residue, giving you a healthy foundation for great style. This clear shampoo helps release each strand from the after-effects of daily styling that can weigh hair down, making it dull and oily.
A polished, sleek, smooth look is always in style. This Pro-V formula (Pantene Pro-V Smooth) cleanses gently and helps align each strand, leaving hair shining and manageably smooth. Intended for wavy or straight styles.
These are just a few - a few, mind you - of the choices available for people with hair like me.
Redken
Volume for normal to fine hair. Boost volume and defy gravity with Body Full, the first style-infused haircare* collection.
Clear Moisture is a lightweight moisture for normal to dry hair. Infuse normal to dry hair with weightless moisture. Redken's exclusive Interbond Conditioning System, combined with a unique, ultra-light Micro-Moisture Complex, helps restore, rebalance and retain optimum moisture without adding weight.
Herbal Essences
Dangerously Straight, for straight hair styles. Craving straight hair? Worried about high humidity? Let us be straight with you. We'll help you get a pin straight look that keeps you sleek and chic.
Or let us soak it to ya. We're all about the moisture, so let us quench your tresses with lush hydration. Pick Hello Hydration for moisturization.
Of course I could also go for Drama Clean for refreshingly clean hair and light conditioning. Look out world! beautifully Clean hair is just a rinse away. We'll make you feel fresh headed and ready to go.
Or am I in a glam mood? Get shimmering. Shimmery Nights is your fun-loving shimmer spray gel friend who adds a touch of shimmer to your hair and controls it lightly all over with my versatile formula fused with pure diamond dust and champagne. One turn and you'll catch the light and maybe spark the night.
Garnier Fructis
Garnier Fructis for Normal Hair is now called Daily Care (What's in a name, right?). Gentle enough for daily use, it nourishes, strengthens, and smoothes each hair strand, keeping it balanced and healthy-looking.
But then again I could also get just the right amount of smoothing for normal to fine hair. Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Sheer provides all-day flyaway control for sleek, shiny hair that feels naturally light.
Or should I just take the Hair 411 quiz for recommendations? Say what? Are you serious? I have to take an online test before I can go to the store to buy something as simple as shampoo? You've got to be kidding me!
Make my day
Basically there are two components required for a shampoo to work:
- detergent, to clean the hair;
- conditioner, to promote smoothness and volume.
The rest? Marketing blabla. You can add gold, pearls, silk, satin, plant extracts, vitamins, provitamins, white tea, even beer - which is alcohol abuse and should be heavily penalized - or any other fancy ingredient you like. But consumer reports show that these additives have no added value whatsoever. In spite of what the cosmetic industry wants us to believe, many of the less expensive shampoos contain the basic ingredients that will clean and improve your hair, so why spend more?

As I read somewhere: true beauty comes from the inside ;)
Thank you for commenting
Dirty hair has no style UNLESS you braid it. LOL Loved the washing your hair video. Was that you in the shower? Kinda looked like your eyes!!!
I still prefer washing it, DottieAnd no, that wasn't me. Hope you're not too disappointed? :)
You're supposed to wash your hair? Whaaaaat?
I guess great minds think alike, Anata :)
The choice is all yours, Ryan :) I would suggest to wash it at least every Christmas ;)
Don't they, Shawna? :)
Ah another virtue of being bald no shampoo needed soap will do. but the beard now that is different story.
I like your "style." I read that Prell shampoo, way back when, was just basically that. Shampooey soapy stuff. Personally, I do think silk protein does a lot of hair. I admit it, I confess, I buy into the hype.
You can spend a LOT of money on shampoo. I don't, but I know women who do, and honestly, I don't see a difference.
Very informative hub, Ananta!
I bet it was you...lol...good hub,,,,as always my dear....
...I use a great shampoo..Nature's Gate,,perfect blend of herbs...Sage, lavender, yarrow,Rosemary and thyme cleanse the hair...leaving it soft an manageable....Nettle, chamomile and wild cherry bark soothes and revitalizes...there is also creme rinse... a little pricey but goes a long way...
So is my .02 cents worth..Thank you for all the information and work you went through.....G-ma :o) hugs
I use that boring shampoo Head and Shoulders. I don't shampoo too much as they say it's good to let the natural oil come out a little.
Excellent hub.
I have tried so many shampoos and conditioners and my hair ends looking the same, so I don't buy the expensive products; however what I do find very helpful is the styling mouse or creams which softens hair while it dries.
Thumbs up!
You’ve just made your hair descend, Bob. Which is basically the same as moving the problem *lol* Like everything I guess being bald both has its advantages and its disadvantages.
I never really thought about it either, until I started with this hub, StayingAlive.
I once heard this story, Shirley. Someone I worked with got this tour in a cosmetic factory. He was shown the entire process of lipsticks being manufactured. At the end of the conveyor belt, the lipsticks where directed in either of two directions. One stream was labeled Revlon (and priced accordingly); the other got some generic brand label. It wouldn’t surprise me if this also works that way with shampoo.
By all means, stick by what you feel comfortable with, G-Ma. For simple guys like me the choice is just too overwhelming ;) *hugs*
I never understood that one, Uninvited Writer. For some reason I still prefer shower gel for my shoulders, rather than a shampoo ;)
I do use some styling wax every now and then, especially when my hair gets longer. And it seems that conditioner is a good thing too, VioletSun.
Thank you all for reading and commenting!
The interesting thing here for me Ananta is that all the products you describe are available in the land of OZ.
Was there a HubPages hair convention I missed? Next time call me team. I feel shunted.
Good hub as always Ananta.
Cheers
I just picked four I know (or think) are international, available worldwide. If they aren't... please forgive me then. I didn't want to do extensive research on availability. You're splitting hairs, if you ask me, Brainstormer :P
Thanks for commenting, welcome as always :)
Great hub, as always! But I didn't see a place in your poll for my hare type! Other than that, I loved it!
I knew I had overlooked something! Too late now, I don't want to lose the results so far. But I guess this would be your shampoo of choice: http://www.petco.com/Assets/product_images/8/80044
I remember my mom telling me when I was young that she heard/read a consumer report that plain dishwashing detergent was just as good as any fancy shampoo. I don't know if she was telling the truth or if we were just out of shampoo that day :-) Nice hub - and interesting poll - I'm surprised to be in the majority with dry hair!
Well, you covered alot of territory. I used to have nice hair back in high school and used fancy shampoos and mousse etc. Now, given the Autumn effect, I pretty much use whatever my wife has on the shelf. I smell like a chick, but, whatever. There's worse things to smell like than a chick, I can tell you. Besides, I like women so it's all good.
I guess for the cleaning effect your mother was right. I doubt that diswashing detergent contains a conditioner too, though.
"Ingredients that Work
Ammonium lauryl sulfate: Detergent type ingredient that cleans the hair.
Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride: Promotes smoothness and volume to hair.
Dimethicone: Coats the hair adding to manageability and softness.
Many of the less expensive shampoo products contain the basic ingredients which will actually improve hair, while leaving out the fluff ingredients. Antioxidants and botanical extracts may make the product more appealing, but can also run up the price, offering no real benefit to improving our hair. "
I'm surprised I'm in the minority with normal hair :) Apparently dry hair is the norm, which makes it normal. *lol*
It’s amazing that a request can result in such a variety of responses, isn’t it? Personally I look for normal hair type shampoo. Since supermarkets now list the price/ml my choice has become less difficult :)
Thanks for commenting, Dineane and Shadesbreath
Ananta another great Hub but no poll for hair type - none!
Splitting hairs too now, are we? I can't please 'm all! Besides... Bald is not a hair type. As there is no hair, there can not be a type either, right? :)
Thanks for commenting, Sixtyorso
mmmm I'm kinda into the protein and smell-um good stuff. I'm a sucker. I love something that smells yummy and makes my hair shine...whatever the name or hype...I'm normally a soft sell. Course, I do have my limits as to what I'll pay. but, I shop for all the stuff that makes us gorgeous. or supposedly. Hasn't worked yet, but I'm ever hopeful. =)) don't confuse me with the facts antana65. LOL can't I dream?
When will women ever be satisfied about they way they look?
And hey, if it makes you feel better, then it is better, I guess. To me it's like a jungle out there with so many brands and types to choose from. Makes you almost ask for assistance ;)
Thanks for the tips on the various types of shampoos and conditioners. Great job.
Ananta: I agree that everyone falls for the hype thrown at them by savvy marketers. Hair products are a huge business but most of that junk is unnecessary. Thanks for the great hub!
Thank you, Research Analyst. I'll have a look at http://hubpages.com/hub/Awsome-Hair-Style-Hubpage- :)
You're right, Christoph. The cosmetic industry is quite good at creating demand for products we never thought we would need.
Anyone use Prell? It's an OLD shampoo, invented long before I came along, but I was in the store and sick of the floofy crap, and wanted something basic. It's as basic as you get but smells nice, and it's never advertised. I was also looking at Garnier Body Boost, it smells nice too. I don't like hyped up shampoo though, like when it says it has all sorts of natural, shine-enhancing, conditioning elements. I have wavy, fine but thick hair (I have a lot of it but the strands aren't heavy) and my hair tends to work best without conditioners. I actually very rarely use rinse conditioners, just a light spray-on will do. I hate conditioner because of how it makes my skin sometimes break out or feel greasy.
I just buy what's on sale :)

Excellent Hub, and so true, most of what they try to sell you is all hype, after all, hair is actually dead, and only the roots are alive. You have a better chance of having extra shiny healthy hair by eating a good diet.
