How To Disable Windows Automatic Restart After Update
76Stop wasting your time
The Point of the hub is to show you how to stop your computer from restarting on its own, also to stop you losing unsaved work.
Have you left your computer whilst still logged on? Only to return to find your computer has rebooted on its own. Have you ever lost work due to the reboot? I for one have lost work, work that I was working on for days. I know I should have saved my work, but like most people when creating articles, saving work is at the back of your mind . Very few people save work before its finished.
The restarting of your computer, is down to Microsoft and their auto update service, this is set as default on windows install. Microsoft windows operating system is changing all the time as Microsoft have to keep up with the hackers and crackers of the world.
Every day there are new security threats in the form of viruses Microsoft are constantly updating their operating systems in the war against the hacker/crackers.
When Microsoft discovers a new virus or flaw in their operating system, and a fix has been made available, Microsoft will update you system automatically, which is a good thing.
However after your system update has completed you are faced with a message stating windows update has completed and your computer will reboot in 5 min. If you are away from your computer in these 5min your system will reboot and you will lose all of your unsaved work.
You have two options to stop your computer from auto restarting.
1: The Quick but Dumb way, You can completely disable windows update, this will make you vulnerable to virus and flaws. Hence the title quick and dumb.
2: Option two, the best and clever way. Time to get your hands dirty and follow the instructions below, chose the instructions for your operating system.
Now as long as you follow the instructions exact you will not fail. Please read over the below instruction and make sure you are confident in completing the task ahead.
You will be dealing with your registry files, the registry files are like the heart of windows system, and like any heart if it breaks every thing else breaks. If you don’t feel confident please don’t attempt the tasks ahead, go and ask someone more experienced to complete the tasks on your behalf, otherwise you can really mess up your system.

4: On the left side of the group policy window, Navigate to
"Local Computer Policy/Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Windows Update"
(as shown in the above screenshot.)
5: Now Double click “No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations” (The file name may vary depending on you service pack will be something similar)
6: You should now be faced with some configuration setting for the file in question, it will look like this,
7: Select Enabled and click ok. Then close the group policy window.
This will disable the automatic restart after windows has update has completed. Your system will now message you stating widows update has completed please reboot, you have two options you can reboot now or reboot later.
And that's all their is to it. You should no longer lose work from windows automatic restart.
Instructions For Window XP HOME

5: Click ok and close all open windows, the auto restart is now been disabled.
If the required directories don't exist you will need to create the directories that are missing. To achieve this you must follow these instructions
1: right click on the last directory that you can find,
2: add a new key. Name the key what ever the missing directory name should be and do this until you have all the directories "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU".
3: Once you have the above directory you need to create a DWord value by right click the au folder and selecting new and the select new DWORD,

My pc asks if want to restart or not and gives me 5 minutes to push yes before doing so, lol so I have lost my work a few times now. ;)
one day i left my computer downloading a CD image via HTTP from MSDNAA. i checked on it and it was half way done, so i went and made a hot chocolate, came back and the comptuer had rebooted. no image. HOW DARE MICROSOFT TELL ME WHAT TO DO TO MY COMPUTER!!!! now at least it wont reboot. thanks a million!
Good findings though working with MSC(Microsoft Console) or regedit both need to be extra careful.
