What's It All About?

Transcendental Meditation  is a method of focusing the intellect.  TM (Transcendental Meditation) comes from the olden Vedic tradition dating back at least 5000 years and is a form of meditation that applies a persistent repetition of a special mantra. The Transcendental Meditation practice was introduced in India in 1955  by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (1917-2008).  Maharishi Mahesh Yogi describes the Transcendental Meditation technique as one which requires no preparation, is easy to do, and can be learned by veryone.  This is why, he says, the practice avoids concentration and struggle. It is taught in a standardized, seven-step program in centers offering TM.

Meditation and Mantras

An important feature among the Transcendental Meditation technique and other techniques that involve mantras is in the style the mantra or sound is used. The mantra is not chanted both vocally or mentally, but is instead a vehicle on which the thought rests. TM uses a diversity of Sanskrit mantras, all of which is a condensed word or phrase that is repeated in the brain to help the self to transfer the mind in the direction of a richer level of consciousness.
