Disney Cruise Lines - Disney Magic
68Disney Cruise Lines - Disney Magic
Disney cruises are a great way for the entire family to have fun. However, if you are looking for cruise vacations for singles or a couple, this cruise is probably not suitable for you (unless you’re a kid at heart). Loud and active is the name of the game on the Disney Cruise Line and you will not find a quiet spot on the ship as there’s always music playing everywhere on the ship. If couples do want to join this cruise, expect a lot of noise and thousands of little ones running all over the place. Many people, me included, are big Disney fans and I really enjoy the atmosphere of being on a Disney theme cruise. People who are fans of Disney will get a kick out of this crews (young and old). There is a lot of entertainment for the kids and most of the ship is designed with children in mind. The deck has table tennis, mini-basketball, mini-tennis and shuffle board courts as well as two swimming pools. One of the swimming pools has a water slide and another pool is positioned next to a large theater style screen. Many people complain that the kiddie pools are too small for the amount of children that are on board. Picture the Disney cruise as a large theme park that is floating on the water. Imagine being at a Disney theme park where you have to wait in line for tickets and reserve spots for activities and this is what you can expect on this cruise. The atmosphere is very laid back and the dress wear is casual (just like inside the theme park). There are a couple of more formal nights but just stick to wearing comfortable clothes for the duration of your 7-day cruise. This ship sails to the Eastern Caribbean and offers three different travel packages.
It’s a children’s world on the Disney cruise line and there are an abundance of activities to choose from for your children. Many people like the private island cruise vacations shore excursions which takes you to Disney's Castaway Island. The children’s entertainment area is approximately 13,000 square feet, which includes a child drop-off service that is available in the evening time. An arcade and gaming area are open for the older teenagers. Your child can also see many Disney characters roaming the deck and will have the opportunity to take a photo with one of many characters. The characters usually come out to play with the children during scheduled times so you will want to check with the cruise line on when is the best time to meet and take pictures with the characters.
There are dance halls, bars and adult-only lounges for the older and mature people. Many activities are targeted towards children so adults and older couples will have a hard time finding activities to do during the day. However, at night there are many more options to choose from.
Some complaints from previous passengers are the long lines for disembarkation and embarkation, signing up for activities, and food quality (quality doesn’t cover the cost). Also many people complain about the customer service on-board the ship as people have a hard time trying to reach Guest Services by phone during busy times. Other than that, the majority of the people were quite satisfied with the rest of the cruise amenities.
The accommodations on-board are quaint but suitable for the basic necessities. Of course, if you pay more you’ll receive more but the standard cabins are fine as is. There are 12 different grades and prices will vary depending on the size, grade and quality of the cabin that you want. Most cabins have standard features such as, clothes storage, closets, hair dryer and bathrobes. The standard interior and exterior cabins are suitable for two people but can be very tight quarters for three or four people. The bathrooms are small, but functional and many bathrooms have shower tubs (small but effective). If you are willing to splurge and go for a suite, you will be offered a much larger living space and extra amenities such as a DVD player, large screen TV and extra beds. However, make sure to talk with your travel agent before booking a suite as some of the larger suites are situated underneath the dance hall and lounge areas. The noise from these areas could make it unbearable to sleep so make sure to request a suite away from these areas. There is room service for all cabins, however room service tends to be limited and make sure to watch out for the 15% surcharge for all beverages.
Don’t expect very exquisite cuisine as the focus is on efficiency and output, just like the theme park. The food is directed towards children. There are three main dining areas and all areas are non-smoking. You will have an opportunity to go through each dining hall and each hall has its on unique décor and atmosphere. Another way to dine without waiting in long lines have to eat next to strangers is to dine at one of the casual food areas. These areas are buffet style dining and are self-serve low-quality foods. Remember that that these cheap all inclusive cruises tend to have the same amenities as larger more expensive lines. The poolside Goofey’s Gallery has grilled sandwiches and you can also get complimentary drinks in this area. If you want to get away from the noise, you can always go to the alternative dining section of the ship. Remember, you will have to reserve a table at the alternative dining area and it will cost you a surcharge of $5. The Palo is an elegant restaurant that takes reservations only. The food focus is Italian style dining and the décor and view are the main focal points of the restaurant. The wine list is pretty good but limited. IF you choose to dine at the Palo, make sure to make reservations immediately before boarding the ship so that you will actually be able to have a seat. This place is the only way you will get decent food on the ship; otherwise you will have to eat theme-park style food for the duration of your trip.
Entertainment on board the ship is excellent and there is something for everyone while cruising on board the Disney Magic. The focus is on families and children and people will not be disappointed with the shoes and musicals that are a featured. The musicals that are currently playing are Disney Dreams, Hercules – The Muse-ical and the Golden Mickey’s. For older people, there is the Route 66 adult entertainment area that has a jazz piano lounge, improve comedy center and a late night events party that is planned once a week. Besides all the entertainment, how about trying to relax? The spa facilities are very impressive and there’s approximately 10,700 sq. feet dedicated to spa treatments. There is a fitness facility that overlooks the ocean. All machines are up to date and are state of the art Cybex muscle-toning equipment. Three spa villas have indoor treatment suites and there are personal hot tubs with open-air showers. You can also relax with a Thermal bath room and use the sauna, mild stream room or the aromatic steam rom. Indulge yourself with a massage and get treated with aromatherapy oils.
