Diwali, a festival of lights, is the most favorite festival of India, although there are lots of festivals in India but this festival is most favorable. India is rich in culture and festivals. Diwali is the time to enjoy the delicious sweets, light the bright lamps and have a sparkling celebration. The festival has been celebrated for ages in India. Diwali is an occasion that allows people to convey their warm feelings to their friends and relatives. Diwali is the festival of sweets, crackers and loads of lights. This festival comes on Kartik Amavasya the dark night so people burn oil lamps and candles and electric lights to remove the darkness. The seen at this moment is marvelous; it can’t be described in words.
The most well known story behind Diwali is in the Ramayana, the great Hindu epic. According to Ramayana, Rama, the prince of Ayodhya was ordered by his father, King Dasharatha, to go away from his country and come back after living in the forest for fourteen years. So Rama went on exile with his wife Sita and brother, Lakshmana. When Ravana, the king of Lanka abducted Sita and took her away to his island kingdom of Lanka, Rama fought against and killed Ravana. He rescued Sita and returned to Ayodhya after fourteen years. The people of Ayodhya were very happy to hear of their beloved prince's homecoming. To celebrate Rama's return to Ayodhya, they lit up their houses with diyas, and decorated the entire city in the grandest manner. So this was the main reason behind this beautiful occasion. This festival is not only celebrated hindus but also people of other religions, it is collectively celebrated by people of every religion.
Lakshmi Puja and Ganesha Puja are performed on this day. Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth and Ganesha is the Lord of Happiness. Lakshmi and Ganesha Puja are performed for prosperity, material abundance, and spiritual prosperity.
Diwali is the time when the market is flooded with a wide variety of gifts. People choose gifts to give to their dear ones. Every one wishes to receive a Diwali gift which is a token of love, appreciation and good wishes. Preparation for the most awaited festival starts days and in fact months before the dates. Children are mostly happy during this festival because lots of gifts come from there loving ones and main thing crackers they love to fire the crackers. Diwali is also special for business men because this is perfect time when business is at its peak. Mostly people buy new vehicles and electric and other home appliances at this holy day because that get special discounts by shopkeepers.
No festival in India can do without sweets. Most of the sweets are home made and Diwali is one such festival which involves the maximum consumption of sweets throughout the year. At this time different types of sweets are available in the market. Sweets are exchanged by relatives and friends in the celebration of this festival.
