Do Long Distance Relationships Work?

Do long distance relationships work? Although there are exceptions, from personal experience, I would say they usually don't work. Getting to know someone this way can be exciting, but it is harder to sustain the relationship. Part of what builds a relationhip is the shared experiences and memories. Because of the distance, it's harder to share these experiences together. Likewise, when there are problems, it's also harder to settle the differences because you can't read each other's body language. After the problem is over, the physical intimacy is missing. The physical intimacy, the hug or the kiss, can be crucial in reconnecting and reassuring each other.

However, usually, there are even bigger problems than this. When people are in a long-distance relationship, they have a tendency to put their best foot forward. There is tendency to hide the personality flaws and negative habits. Secondly, most people who are in a long-distance relationship are lonely, and they want to believe and hope for the best. Since we can't totally know a person through letters, emails, and phone calls, I think our imagination fills in the missing parts with what we want to see. However, when the couple spends time together in person, there are alot of suprises which we may or may not like. There is a big difference between reality and one's imagination.
