Do Long Distance Relationships truly work?

Long distance relationships sure can put a strain on a budding romance, however, I think they are entirely possibly under certain circumstances. If it is someone you meet while they're on a business trip for instance and then goes back home, the odds of building that relationship into a strong foundation is slim to none. Should you be involved with someone you already had that foundation with, like a long time friend, I don't see why it couldn't be possible with committment on both ends. You already have the trust and know those "get to know you" quirks about the other person to begin with....plus if it is meant to be, then distance shouldn't matter right? When you have an opportunity to see each other make the most of the time you have together, plus emails and the telephone work wonders also to bridge the distance. I have someone in my life that feels the opposite as I do, maybe he'll read this and have a change of heart :)
