One of the most important things to remember about any sort of plumbing repair project that you decide to take on yourself is, if you do not know what you are doing...do not do it. Although some plumbing problems are relatively easy to solve such as leaky faucets or taps, it is important to realize when the problem is too far out of your realm of experience. If you tackle major projects without knowing what you are doing you can be pretty sure that you're walking a fine edge between success and major failure. Calling an expert may be the best advice anyone can receive in that situation. Plumbers will rarely turn away any work that they can readily accomplish, but when they have to fix problems created by other people who were not sure of what they were doing (you), it will most likely end up costing you more than, if you had just gone ahead and called them in the first place. One of the things that can happen when you try to do the work yourself is using the wrong size of wrench and stripping a nut that will only end up making it harder or impossible for the professional plumber to work with. When a professional contractor has to spend time undoing what you did before he can start to do his job, the cost of the project can easily double.

There will also always be those jobs that simply require the capability of an experienced and licensed professional. Any plumbing repair projects that are near gas lines or high-pressure steam lines, such as those found in restaurants and factories will always require a state-qualified and licensed plumber to do the work. Amateurs, so always leave these sorts of jobs to the professionals should never attempt commercial or industrial jobs.

Stick To What You Know

One bit of advice, which is important for all amateur plumbers to heed, is that if you think you need to purchase a specialized tool to complete the project you are working on, and then you should not do it. Even worse, if you need to buy a part for whatever you are trying to fix and you do not know what it is or what it does, and then you should pick up the phone and call a professional. Trying to replace a part you are not familiar with or using a tool you have never handled before is just asking for trouble.

Almost every home has a plunger sitting in the corner or under the counter. Some even have small drain snakes in the workshop for fixing clogged toilets and drains. These two tools are safe for homeowners to use and are easy for anyone to use. Other tools such as power snakes and air-powered plunging systems can cause damage to weakened pipes when in the hands of the inexperienced. So unless you're ready to clean up the major mess that may result from you trying to handle a plumbing repair project or emergency yourself, leave the job alone and call a professional. You will be glad you did.
