Do We Become What We Think About?
71
Tonight as I was running around here on the Hubpages I became aware that it seems some of us...are a bit troubled about what life has given us? That we tend to joke around to cover up what we really are feeling...and is a good thing, don't get me wrong...or we are revealing how we feel by joking...it is difficult to read between the lines..and then maybe there is truely nothing to read...the lines are as they are written???
I to have many regrets about my life and things I have done or haven't done...and I support all who dare to reveal feelings and be honestly trying to make themselves better people...be the feelings sad, angry, hurting, happy, silly, forgiving, loving, caring, believing, trusting, what ever they are, it is good to speak out, to write them down and know you are safe, you have dear friends who can listen and are willing to...
I ran across a writing that really made me think and also made me decide to write this hubpage...it may be what you need to hear and it may piss you off...I am only passing on a way of thinking, I think makes sense...and I do have permission to pass this on...:O)
It is from a man named : Earl Nightingale and an excerpt from " The Strangest Secret" so I am quoting now....
George Bernard Shaw said "People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don't believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and if they can't find them, they make them."
"Well, it's pretty apparent, isn't it? And every person who discovered this believed (for a while) that he was the first one to work it out. We become what we think about.
Conversely, the person who has no goal, who doesn't know where he's going, and whose thoughts must therefore be thoughts of confusion, anxiety and worry- his life becomes one of frustration, fear anxiety and worry. And if he thinks about nothing...he becomes nothing.
How does it work? why do we become what we think about? Well, I'll tell you how it works, as far as we know. To do this, I want to tell you about a situation that parallels the human mind.
Suppose a farmer has some land, and it's good, fertile land. The land gives the farmer a choice; he may plant in that land whatever he chooses. The land doesn't care. It's up to the farmer to make the decision.
We're comparing the human mind with the land because the mind, like the land, doesn't care what you plant in it. It will return what you plant, but it doesn't care what you plant.
Now, let's say that the farmer has two seeds in his hand-one is a seed of corn, the other is nightshade, a deadly poison. He digs two little holes in the earth and plants both seeds-one corn, the other nightshade. He covers up the holes, waters and takes care of the land...and what will happen? Invariably, the land will return what was planted.
As it is written in the Bible, "As ye sow, so shall ye reap."
Remember the land doesn't care. It will return poison in just as wonderful abundance as it will corn. So up come the two plants-one corn, one poison.
The human mind is far more fertile, far more incredible and mysterious than the land, but it works the same way. It doesn't care what we plant...success...or failure. A concrete, worthwhile goal...or confusion, misunderstanding, fear, anxiety and so on. But what we plant it must return to us.
You see, the human mind is the last great unexplored continent on earth. It contains riches beyond our wildest dreams. It will return anything we want to plant."
And so that is the end of my quote ...
As I am getting older and watching my dear sweet Mother getting on with her dementia (Alzheimer) I see , or think I see the things she planted, unknowingly, from the hardships she went through, as we all go through... just as we need to prepare for a disaster we need to plant in our brains the good things we have and good things we accomplish...yesterday is gone...tomorrow isn't here ..that's why we call today THE PRESENT...God be with you...G-Ma :O) HUGS

I loved it! It is so true that our minds are like a fertile land that will either grow good or bad. And what we feed our mind ultimately does dictate what we can become. We have the choice whether to become someone in life or let life overcome us. We do reap what we sow and there are always consequences to our actions or lack thereof. WONDERFUL!!
Cris A...Thank you my dear, how did you do that so fast???I was editing it and adding the poll...I am always in trouble when I try to quote someone tho...how do ther people get away with it?

I agree with what you say but it has been said many times in many different ways. What I find unique is your analogy of the farmer and his land - it really gets your message across. :)
G-Ma! It is the strangest thing, I was just reading The Strangest Secret a few days ago. I really believe you are what you think. It is very difficult to always think positively. I am trying really hard with all that is going on around me. I do know that if I stay focused on what I want I will eventually get it. Thanks for the words of inspiration!
Take Care!
I love the seed analogy G-Ma. We do need to pick our seeds...unfortunately few of us are that discerning.
Beautifully said, G-Ma. You are like the Reverend G-Ma Johnson of the Church of Hub Page Writers!!! Very inspiring!!!
I also wish you all the best with your mother. We found a lot of great info and support from Alzheimers Association (www.alz.org). Hugs, MM
I enjoyed your hub. Lovely words of wisdom from one who knows. Not just lumpy custard words. Thank you.
This is absolutely true, and we do have to really pay attention to where we direct our thought energies! It's funny how every so often this subject re-emerges as a "new" philosophy - most recently as "The Secret", which is the Law of Attraction, or more succinctly, becoming what we think about! Wise words; thank you for sharing.
Lovely hub, G-Ma, and oh so true. Here's a quote you may like:
"The brain is not a drawer to fill, it's a fire to light". This is actually a pop transformation of the original Yeats quote: "Education is not filling a bucket, but lighting a fire". I rather like the pop version, to top off the original quote :-)
G-Ma, I couldn't agree more! I wish I could plant the positive seeds more often than the others...I'm working on it! Thanks for a really awesome read!
Great hub. This reminds me of the Law of Attraction (from wiki: "Law of Attraction says people's thoughts (both conscious and unconscious) dictate the reality of their lives, whether or not they're aware of it.") Thank you for spreading the positivity!
I love what Cris A. calls you -- "the grand dame of hope and hugs" -- that's just lovely; especially as it is so well deserved. Thank you for writing this wonderful hub, with gentle wisdom and real kindness. hugs back at ya, T.
This a great story. Thanks for sharing it. Earl is one of the best.
Jim
G-MA - great hub and full of inspiration! The Bible tells us in the book of Proverbs 23:7 "As a man thinketh in his heart so is he" The heart and the mind often coincide in actions. As I read your hub I was also reminded of the slogan for the UNCF "A Mind Is a Terrible Thing To Waste". What goes in, or lack thereof, always comes out - or lack thereof.
Thanks for sharing!
yes it is true that your thoughts make your life.the problem with me is I'm so pissed off right now(have been for months)that I can't focus.have any advice on how to get rid of anger?
Well I am amazed at the response..THANK YOU ALL so very much and always, always Believe in yourselves... I do ! ! !

Anger is not a bad thing. It means simply that maybe our needs aren't being met...our sense of fairness is ignored...or even our rights are being violated.
I wrote a hub on ANGER maybe it will help to go read it?
And just keep on trying my dear, never give up...G-Ma :O) Hugs & Peace
You are a voice of reason filled with hugs and love on hubpages. Keep sharing your kind wisdom with the rest of us.
Peggy W....Awww Thank you my dear...I get worried that I am too bossy and being too much of a G-Ma ?? but is me...G-Ma :O) Hugs & Peace
I believe so G-Ma and it's truly great to know that we have this kind of control. It really isn't so hard if we could just REMEMBER to think of what we want to become.
Your writing just keeps getting better and better. Keep it up cuz we enjoy!

G-Ma,
I love you for writing this thoughts. It's incredible how words can touch the lives of other people or affirm what they believe already. Sometimes, we do need to hear it from others. I am with you 101%. I love this thought G-Ma. I sent you a hug and a big kiss right now. Did you get it? :)

G-Ma- I saw you inquiring about Ashwin in couple of hubs. I have also sent emails and finally about a month ago Violetsun(Marie) told me that Ashwin was taking a planned break (but still no idea why there is no response to any of our emails). I too join you to pray and wish for him to be alright.
CW Thanks sweetie..He e-mailed me and told me he was having surgery on his shoulder and elbow from golfing injury...but I think that was like 3 months ago now...am just worried and hoping all went well...I miss the boy
When I get to be your age, I want to have the wisdom just like you do. Then I would know I have lived a full life because I learned from life and shared it among others.
Love you, G-Ma. :)

good for you G-Ma!! I also believe we are what we think, we are what we eat, we are what we choose. That's why sometimes I'm good, sometimes I weigh just right, and sometimes I'm oo so bad. haah =)) good reminders here, let's get thinking those good thoughts!!
mariesue...you and are are much a like...good and bad...happy and sad...but you are way the better writer...Thanks for the comment sweetie...G-Ma :O) Hugs & Peace
Nice work G-Ma! I also know that some weeds blow in from the outside and it is our job to eradicate them before they take over!
C.S....Yes my dear this is also very true...Good point...Thanks for commenting...G-Ma :O) Hugs & Peace
This is the first of your hubs I have read, and I love the idea that we can make our own circumstances. Looking at the world as a whole, I don't know that it is completely true, but for the most part, I would agree. Even if we cannot do everything we desire to do, having a plan and a positive mindset will go far.
Ivorwen...Nice to meet you my dear...and Thank you so much for commenting..and I agree with you, but trying is important...G-Ma :O) Hugs & Peace
To give a smile,to praise someone is free, but what a lot richer they can be because of your kindness....Blondepoet

Hi G-Ma,
Very true & no one else can say better than you, I love the idea & the reasoning.
Thought is the organizing factor in man, intersected between the causal primary instincts and the resulting actions. Albert Einstein
I can teach anybody how to get what they want out of life. The problem is that I can't find anybody who can tell me what they want. Mark Twain
I published a new hub about women please visit.

Do We Become What We Think About
well written, I come on , welcome to my hub
Thank you and are we fans??? G-Ma :O) Hugs
I gotta do some better planting ! Thanks for this nice hub .
When I die I want people to say that she lived her life to the fullest
Very good musings... and so true.
I thought it was interesting that you chose nightshade for your 'poison' example because tomatoes, chili and bell peppers, potatoes, and eggplant are also a species of nightshade. Other species have have been used medicinally, some are narcotic and poisonous. Tobacco is also a nightshade .
So when you plant-- look for the subtle differences.
CINDYVINE...I think we all do..Thanks for commenting sweetie...G-Ma Hugs :o)
ROCHELLE...wow I didn't know that ...thanks for the clue and for commenting...G-Ma :o) Hugs

you are right on about writing down your feelings to reveal things. your hub is a timely reminder of input output.
newsworthy...Thank you dear...G-Ma :O) Hugs
nice hub..
Thanks..:O)
G-Ma, What a wonderful truth! I love the comparison of our minds to the land...it is an excellent parable. What we choose to plant is a beautiful example of free will. We have the raw materials, what we build is up to us!
We choose how we want to interpret the reality of our world, whether we do it consciously or subconsciously. And in our interpretation, we make our reality.
I, also, do not believe in circumstances...I believe in purpose. I don't believe in randomness...I believe in choice. It is hard to keep this in the forefront of my mind at all times, but that is what living is for. To improve, to grow, to succeed! Thanks for this wonderful hub!
G_Ma,,,Beautifully written,,I agree with what you said..
I so enjoy your hubs,,,I am new to this Hubbing, and read all your hubs because they are all so well written. I admire you for caring for your aging mom, not many can say or will agree to do the same.
