Owning an online business can give you many advantages in life, but do you have what it takes? Here are 6 questions to ask yourself if you are thinking of starting an online business:

1) What kind of lifestyle to you want?

There are many hard-working people out there who have leveled-off in their job income but still want a better lifestyle. An online business is flexible enough to increase your income while you work a job and can aid in your transition from employee to business owner, if that's the direction you choose to go.

2) Are you willing to put in the work?

Like traditional businesses, there is a process in getting an online business off the ground. Some people make it seems as easy as setting up a storefront and then suddenly you're rich-the truth is a stable business can take 1-5 years worth of work to establish.

The good news is however that online businesses usually don't require you to go into debt, allowing you to profit much sooner. They're also easier and less expensive to operate, as opposed to traditional businesses.

3) Are you willing to learn?

Online business has a lot of the same principles as traditional business. To succeed faster, you'll need to read and associate more with like-minded people. If you're transitioning from the employment world, you'll have to learn patience that isn't required for a paycheck-to-paycheck lifestyle. In addition to that, you may have to learn some things from the technology side to make your business become more effective.

4) Are you willing to do more than the minimum?

Jobs have a tendency to put people in the mindset of doing the least amount of work for the most amount of money. In business, you usually build wealth by in series of intense initial efforts, and the work you do has long-term impact on your income. Doing enough just to "get by" will not only slow you down but make your business go backwards.

5) Are you willing to accept failures?

People are taught in school at a young age that failures are bad, but in business they can lead you to success. Just because you don't get something right the first time does not mean you've lost completely. The best thing to do however is learn from the failures of others so you don't repeat the same mistakes.

6) Can you handle success?

Along with learning more about business, learning more about how to manage the extra money you earn is important. Getting out of debt should be your priority for stability, and you should always have some money set aside for personal and business emergencies.

I hope that these questions have given you a starting point, but realize this should not be an overnight decision in either direction. My last recommendation is to do more research and check out various options that match your dreams and goals. As the owner of several online businesses, I've found the experience well worth it for what my husband and I wanted for our lives. I wish you the best in either direction you decide to take.
