Do it yourself Bird House using Styrofoam
77Materials Needed
Who does not love to watch the birds come and go playfully from a bird house? You can spend hours just watching the birds inspect and give the once over to the bird houses we place in the garden for them! There are such pretty bird houses available in the market, but the one you make, all by yourself , for the birds in your garden, gives you unparalleled satisfaction, pleasure and contentment.
One day, I had this sudden urge to build a birdhouse immediately .I looked around for materials and my eyes fell on a Styrofoam sheet stacked at the corner of my craft room. An idea flashed through my mind. Why not use Styrofoam to make a birdhouse? I did just that and was amazed at the result! It came out quite cute and it can double up as a decorative piece as well.
Here’s how I made my Styrofoam Birdhouse -
Materials needed:
You need:
- Styrofoam - one 1-1½ " sheet
- Plaster of paris -2 cups
- White cement - 2 cups
- Putty powder - 1 cup
- Fevicol or White Glue to mix
- Soft Twigs or thin hard twigs or as per your choice
- Paint –whatever color fancies you
Cut the styrofoam into the following sizes:
For the Base: 6 ½” by 5” – 1 no
Roof :6½ by 5½ -1 no
5½ by 5½ -1 no
Wall :8’ by 6” – 2 nos
Step 1.
Mix the plaster of paris, white cement and putty powder using white glue to blend . It should be the consistency of thick batter.
Step 2.
Glue the cut styrofoam with the mixed paste into the shape of the birdhaouse as in fig.4.make a round opening for the birds to get in!
Step 3.
When dry, apply the mixed paste all over the assembled styrofoam and smoothen with a pallette knife.Let it dry overnight.
Step4.
Paint it with the color of your choice.
Step5.
Next take some soft twig, apply white glue and stick it on
the roof as in fig 6.You can fix 3 stout twigs, one on the top and two on both the sides of the roof for a more
natural look .Check out fig 6.
Yes,that's it. Done! Your styrofoam birdhouse is ready! Hope you enjoy building your birdhouse as much as I did!

Neat - nice job. Just be sure to place bird houses well away from your house as they attract rodents that will take up residence in your attic and basement.
