Do moms really need to breastfeed their babies?

A local breastfeeding campaign said:

"Dog's milk is for puppy, pig's milk is for piglet, cow's milk is - for your baby? Your baby's not a cow..."

The above statement is quiet true. It's in the fact that breastfeeding moms are becoming lesser and more moms are switching to breastmilk alternatives such as processed cow's milk. However, the statement above is not aggreable for there are moms that really want to breastfeed but can't because of some serious reasons.

"To nurse a baby is not easy" (mostly to those who were unable and disabled to produce breastmilk), said my sister. Last Christmas, she had delivered successfully her very first baby, and it's a baby girl, they were all happy. But what is sad is the baby only tasted a little amount of her breastmilk. She had only done few days of breastfeeding. The reason is she had a big complication related to her labor that needs earlier medical attention. She had been prescribed by the doctor high-dosage medicines urging her to stop breastfeeding as what also her doctor advised in order to prevent harmful effects to the baby. So, she prepared bottlefeeding. Luckily, the baby is growing strong and healthy. Infact, the baby will be going one year old this coming Christmas.

What is really breastfeeding?

I've gathered some information from http://wikidpedia.org.

Breastfeeding is the feeding of an infant or young child with milk from a woman's breasts. Babies have a sucking reflex that enables them to suck and swallow milk.

With virtually no exceptions, human breast milk is the best source of nourishment for human infants. However, experts disagree about how long to breastfeed to gain the greatest benefit, and how much more risk is involved in using artificial formulas.

A mother may breastfeed her infant, or another infant, e.g., as a wet nurse. While there are conflicting studies about the relative value of artificial feeding, including infant formula, it is acknowledged to be inferior to breastfeeding for both full term and premature infants. In many countries, including the First World, artificial feeding is associated with more deaths from diarrhoea in infants.

National governments and international organizations promote breastfeeding as the best method of feeding infants in their first two years and beyond. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) also promote breastfeeding. Regulating authorities recognize the superiority of breastfeeding but also try to make artificial feeding safer.

Why other moms don't breastfeed?

My sister can breastfeed but for the baby's sake, she never. Unable moms would be happy if they'll be given a chance to breastfeed their babies. But why those moms who are capable enough to produce breastmilk never breastfeed. There must be reason why other moms don't breastfeed... Kindly put on the comment section...

Breastmilk is the best for babies up to 2 years

No matter what we do, even there will be lots of infant formula that will come. No any milk can be as precious as breastmilk. Breastmilk will always be still the best. Because breastmilk is is a natural, pure, real mother's love... :-)

I have breastfed all three of my children. It is such a special bonding time and it's such an awesome feeling to see your baby grow from the nourishment that you provided. My last baby was also due on Christmas day last year, but he was born Dec. 11, so he just turned 1 a couple of days ago. He still enjoys nursing.

Also, breast fed babies have better immune systems because their mom's pass antibodies to them through the milk. My babies seem to get sick less often than other children, and I credit this to breastfeeding.
