I think the supreme court judges are too powerful.and a appointment for life is like having secret kings.I mean a life time to shape the laws of the land as they see fit?the supreme court should be broken down to terms.what if you get a bunch of evil people sitting on the supreme court?are a bunch of fools like the last adminstration, sitting on the supreme court, they could cause some serious problems!a life time is to long.
Remember though, a Supreme Court Judge is picked by a President and then investigated by the FBI and the approved by the Senate. It is not an easy process. It takes a long time to find a suitable candidate. If there were term limits, say every 4-8 years, that means that a single President would get to handpick ALL of the justices at once? That would be very dangerous. Our current system, since it is based upon the fact that you serve until you die (or you lose your faculties) only allows new nominations every once in a while. To go through the process every 4 or 8 years and to let the SAME PERSON choose all the justices at once would be incredibly detrimental to our society. Just my two cents! :)
FDR... Tried to make more justices so that he will have a greater role and this shows how if they were choosen periodically that the will show bias towards their respectable parties...
First, the Supreme Court Justices are not "elected", nor is their term "for life". They are appointed and confirmed by the Senate. Their term is for a "period of good behavior", which is not necessarily the same as a life term.
The Supreme Court has usurped authority it does not have according to the Constitution. Ever since Marbury vs. Madison, the Supreme Court has injected its non-authority into many cases, heard cases in which they have no jurisdiction, and nullified legislation they have no authority to nullify.
I would support a maximum age of 75. Justice Stevens is now 89 and may drop dead or get dementia any time now if he doesn't have it already.
I take it he is republican, or nominated by a republican president, right Ralph? ;)

The fact that judges remain for life adds the necessary power that is needed for the position. To place term limits on Supreme Court Justices would undermind and greatly reduce the fantastic system that is currently in place. Just my thoughts! :) I'm very interested in research on the Supreme Court and your hub caught my eye. Good post!
