Aren't we treading on controversial territory here - I am sure there would be strong opinions on this subject. Coming to your question, while I wouldn't use the term "child abuse," I pretty much agree with the sentiment. I read somewhere that a majority of circumcisions done in America are not done for religious reasons. I wouldn't touch the religious angle for obvious reasons - I don't want to get into a religious debate. However, I don't understand why people would want to get their children circumcised if they are not religiously obliged to do so.
The majority argument put forward to justify circumcision is that of "cleanliness," that it is healthy. The argument is that smegma (the foul smelling pasty accumulation) is a bad thing and a sign of lack of cleanliness. However, smegma build-up is very easy to manage and not cause enough to warrant circumcision. Also, normal quantities of smegma kills bacteria and provides moisture to the glans.
My biggest issue with circumcision is that personal choice/rights go out of the window. Consent of the individual concerned obviously is not sought. That decision is made for him by his parents. Isn't that wrong?? Now, that can be viewed as a kind of abuse!! Shouldn't the individual's choice matter in this case? Its a procedure that can't be reversed. Its not the same as vaccinating your child - it definitely is not akin to ear piercing or any of the things people bring up in a feeble attempt to defend wanton circumcisions.
Can This Not Hurt???
Possible Complications of Circumcision - Would You Want Your Child To Suffer Through Any Of Them?
There are certainly complications that could result from circumcision, which shouldn't be overlooked by parents. Some of them include:
- Unusually bad scarring.
- Skin tags - some of these complications may present in later life.
- Also, lack of foreskin diminishes sensitivity of the glans (the tip of the penis).
- Accidental snipping of the glans.
However, since there are virtually no complications immediately following surgery, except for excessive bleeding in some cases, circumcision is viewed as a 100% complication-free procedure.
Its certainly interesting to view male circumcision when one compares it to the practice of female circumcision - a practice that is prevalent in some African countries. Most view female circumcision as being mutilation of the genitals. Isn't male circumcision similar? When you are cutting off the foreskin, you are in fact removing thousands of nerves and it invariably is going to affect sensitivity of the penis. One can certainly say that the effect is minimal, etc, but the question is shouldn't consent of the individual concerned be asked? People value the right of an individual so much - shouldn't rights matter in this case?
Circumcision may be good or bad - I ain't nobody to judge that. However, I do feel that individuals should be able to make that decision and their consent sought, especially if circumcision is being done for non-religious reasons.

There is also the finding that circumcision reduces transmission of AIDS and STDs. However, as with all such findings, there are other findings that seem to conflict them.
What are facts?
If bodily fluids are the source of transmission of HIV/AIDS or STDs, how does the fact of a part of skin covering the penis affect transmission, when in fact the opening of the penis is always inside the vagina during the act and potentially exchanging fluids. Studies happen all the time and are contradicted by other studies. But, I just don't get the logic of circumcision reducing the transmission rate of HIV/AIDS.
Couldn't just be a secret handshake, no it's gotta be the skin off the most sensitive part of your body....without anesthesia.....or your consent.....cause apparently God is a sick individual. Have you read his best selling book?
Circumsision is the least of your worries, if you rub it too much that's a stonable offence. You should be put to death for masturbation, adultry etc.
Yep, the bible, what a wonderful thing. It keeps us rightous and holy. Just look around at this paradise Jesus brought. Boy it's a good thing he came along, life is so much better now.
"Perverse religious cult mutilate infants' genitalia - apparantly, 'God told them to', police state"
- How can this be considered anything but freakishly scary and weird?
If you think circumcision for an infant is not a traumatic experince, watch this vid:
Bob, I didn't want to call it child abuse thus far, but after watching that video, I've changed my mind - its indeed child abuse. That was awful. The child was in obvious pain - so difficult just to watch. Think parents should watch this - those who think that circumcision is not a traumatic experience or that anesthesia can make the pain of it go away!!!
Did you just deleted my long and insightfull comment just because it contradicted your argument?
Phil, I found that your comment was just too long and I had no way of editing it. It touched upon some unnecessary points that I didn't want displayed. I agree that parts of it were insightful and I do know about those points, but alas I couldn't edit your comment. I had just 2 options, either to approve it or delete it and I chose the latter - sorry about that. Do keep your comments short and to the point. Thank you.
right...
Circumcision does not prevent HIV or STDs. Condoms do! I think it is a source of child abuse. Why not let your son opt for it once he is older to make the choice himself? What harm does that do? More and more parents are not jumping on the band-wagon instead they are taking this issue more serious and finding the facts.

I agree entirely with you. If not for religious purposes, circumcision should be a personal choice. It has been my experience that uncircumsized men are more sensitive than circumsized men. I think that all men should have that option, it's not fair to take that from them. Is it child abuse....that's debatable, but is it wrong....most definately.
