Do you think that water-boarding is torture? Either way, should governments use it to extract important information?

Is Water boarding Torture

By Ryan Fisher

Our government has recently been self checking itself, so to speak, on whether or not detainees are being "tortured" during interrogations. The main topic that has been on all the hit lists is water boarding. Water boarding is where you place a cloth or plastic over someone's mouth and pour water over their face to simulate drowning. I think that yes this is torture but I also think it's important to ask a few questions regarding torture and torture techniques.

Everyone knows the saying, "All's fair in love and war" right. So why would we look at torture and be like, oh my god, we can't treat people that way. You have to ask your self what if it was the other way around. Would another country or terrorist group be as concerned about our rights as human beings? I think not. I think the interrogation room is a lot like Las Vegas; what happens there stays there. If an American solider is captured a terrorist group wouldn't take it easy saying he has rights, let's ask him nicely. They are going to hook him up to a stripped down box spring and a car battery.

I think there are levels of torture and I think the level you approach someone at should be considered by the level of information they have. For example we can take a look at the TV show 24. If you have a nuclear bomb in the United Stated and you know that the prisoner you have knows where it's at are you going to take the time to be polite or are you going to shove bamboo shoots under his finger nails? In reality if the president came on TV and said we have captured a terrorist who has smuggled a nuclear bomb inside the country and only he knows where it is. Well first if it was Bush most of us would laugh. For fun we will say it's a president we believe. So anyway the president comes on and asks does any American Citizen have a problem with us subjecting this man to torture to find the bomb; do you think anyone would be like, "yeah, I do, torture is messed up." I highly doubt it.

When it comes to preservation number 1 is always first. This is why if placed in a situation where you can torture someone to find out the truth I say get err done. After all as I said above would the other countries or terrorists be so nice to us? Never forget in war there is only one winner. I think that we would like to be that winner. So in conclusion, yes, water boarding is torture but I believe that the means can justify the ends.

Your reasoning is superficial. Bush's use of torture has violated international law. Moreover, the use of torture by the Bush administration was not in situations like the one yhou described. We have shamed our country throughout the world and lowered our standards to a level comparable to those in uncivilized countries. And we have exposed our own people to similar shameful treatment.

Is waterboarding torture? Obviously, yes unless you are a sniveling asshole who won't say it like it is. Should we engage in it? No unless you want to side with cruelty, injustice and all the dark demons of human nature and all the sorriest chapters of human history. The only world worth struggling for is one in which torture and all forms of murder are illegitimate.
