Do You Believe In Ghosts Or Hauntings?

Shadows or bright spots of light out of the corners of your eyes. Shadows where shadows should not be. Imaginary friends of children. Feeling a presence of someone close long after he or she has passed away. Your name being called as you begin to wake in the morning. I have experienced all of the above, I guess I am just a slow learner, because, I still do not consider myself a believer in ghosts and hauntings.

T. J. B. said he knew when his grandmother had passed on, because, he saw her sitting on his sofa. While it is true his grandmother had suffered two major strokes before she died which paralyzed her on her left side, she was as T. J. B. had remembered her, as he was the only grandchild who knew her before her even her first massive stoke. T. J. B.'s Uncle Kevin had basicially the same experience, and even felt her presence for years after.

I have been "haunted" by my mother since her death. Mum has been gone since 2000, and it wasn't until about 2007 that I began to feel her presence begin to recede. I have taken the "receding hauntings" to mean that I am slowly healing after mourning Mum's death.

I am too much of a chicken to hunt ghosts, but, some of those who do this for a living have claimed they have experienced occaisons when something ... or, someone ... has passed through them. Others have claimed to encounter spirits/ghosts who have chosen to stay behind to tease or touch the living. (Do you recall anyone in your life who was a control-freak?)

I have respect for those who believe, especially for those who have had experiences -- pleasant or otherwise. Is just acceptance the key?

In England, Ireland, and Scotland, they are called spirits, not ghosts, and the more spirits they have the more haunted they are ... which pleases them, as I understand. They grew accustomed to spirits and hauntings long before the USA was born. (The veneer of civilization of the USA is rather thin when compared to most other countries.)

And, is it any surprise that one of England's sons wrote at least two books on spirits?

The History of Spiritualism  - downloadable ebook

This same son of England, who was a Scot, went on to write all of those Sherlock Holmes stories that gave the rest of the world the knowledge of fingerprints, as a start ... Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (Knighted in 1902).

You know, I think that anything that has been here, is still here, somewhere,  too many unexplained things happen, and I believe all things are connected.  I have had 3 significant communication type experiences from my mother who died in 1969

I believe. =))

good to see you, by the way, read my last two hubs to catch up about some news!! email me ? =))

What I wonder, about ghosts, is why do they hang around? Unfinished business, perhaps?

Fascinating hub and great topic. Personally I do believe in Spirits/Ghosts as there are too many 'normal' and 'respectable' people who have had such experiences.

I agree, Misty, I've had some definite feelings of the presence of loved ones, and unfortunately, my husband occasionally feels a strong presence of an evil presence. One time he said "No doubt, evil is ugly." and he's NOT one to believe in things he can't see. yet, some things and sometimes, you just "know."

My Step Father is the biggest sceptic going, yet recently his elderly Sister was staying for a few days in a residential home when she woke up in the middle of the night and found a man in her room. Terrified she dashed out of the room and upstairs to where her friend was also staying. Blurting out that she had seen a man in her room security was called, and they checked out the whole home thoroughly. Everywhere was locked up tight, with no man to be found. His Sister refused to return to the room that night. The following day one of the staff asked her to describe what she saw, and also asked her if she had experienced any problems with finding the taps (faucets) running for no reason. His sister told her what had happened and agreed that she had found her taps running more than once. This was the point the staff member told her she had experienced a ghost that a number of other residents had also experienced. Apparently it only began to appear 6 months ago, but in each case the experience has been the same, right down to the taps coming on, and people being certain there is a man in the room with them. Each time it happens it is in the same room.

I think even my Step Dad is now having doubts as to whether Ghosts might just exist after all now.

ewwww that is scary. It's such a shock to see something or feel something we can't explain. Like UFO's - something is there!! I think the layers of separation between the then and now are thin.

mistyhorizon2003, there are so many things we see and experience that make us wonder.  i've had enough now that one would think i'm a believer, eh? i'm a mick (northern irish catholic) who has practiced the craft since 1974.  these ghostie things are new to me in these past few years.

still trudging on,

I'm a believer. I can see/feel them, I also clear them. It can be fascinating getting the stories from them. As a general rule I don't make a habit of tuning into them but if someone was having a problem with spirit or ghost in their home I'd check it out. I also wrote a hub on the subject.

My father died a few months ago. It was interesting watching him on his afterlife journey. I felt it was a privelege at some level.

I am not a believer of that though I feel that when we cannot explain some incidents in cause-effect rule we just try to.....

But in other side, I don't see anything wrong in believing it because everything has different languages to explain according to one's level of understanding. To grow that is one prime objective of human being.

Good hub good to read.
