How do I know if my dog’s glands need expressing?

There are three basic signs which indicate a dog needs help expressing his glands.

  • First, you may notice a "poopy" smell coming from your dog. The glands are probably full and seeping.
  • Second, there could be swelling around the rectum where the glands are located. The swelling will seem to be more on the left and right sides, rather than top and bottom.
  • The most recognizable and noticeable sign is when you see your dog drag his bottom across your carpet. This "scooting" means his glands are full and he is emptying them onto your floor!

If you would like to express your dog's scent glands yourself check with your veterinarian for the proper technique. You may also ask your groomer to express the glands for you. Of course, your veterinarian will do this service for you.
