Before the 2006 SLO AIDS Walk
Before the 2006 SLO AIDS Walk

Yeah, college is a time for learning, enjoying oneself, taking in new experiences. Most students just want to have fun during these 4-7 years of their life. Understandably (I am in this group as well).

Which is why I do community service. I've been doing service for longer than I can remember and have been involved in so many service organizations and events that it was easy to keep it going once I started attending Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo. I've continued to participate in various service projects and groups in my two years of school.

However, I'm often saddened by the absence of shared enthusiasm for service to the community. As a resident advisor last year I struggled to get students to attend Special Olympics practices to play with them. Turnout was low for food drives on the part of my peers.

I just want everyone to know how easy it is to get involved in the community, no matter where you are, as a college student.

1) Go to the school community center

Every college should have some sort of hub where students with the same passion for serving can get together and share and/or hear of new projects around the area. These people are more than happy to tell you about what you can join into. And it's always more fun serving in groups!

2) Keep an eye out for flyers

College students tend to be really good about getting the word out. Whether through posted notices, e-mail messages, or radio announcements, things always get disseminated throughout campus. There's hardly any excuse not to know what's going on. When I was a freshman in the dorms, I learned of upcoming service activities through the posters the RAs hung up in the main lobby. That lead me to other opportunities that I still take part in.

3) Join a service group or organization

I'm a proud member of Alpha Phi Omega (APhiO), which is a co-ed service fraternity at my school and nationwide. There are also other Greek groups, like Gamma Beta Chi and Gamma Sigma Sigma. There are also clubs on campus, like Rotaract and Circle K, which I was also a member of. You can find one that you feel best in and serve from there.

4) Go directly to a charity organization

In San Luis Obispo, there are food shelters, a Salvation Army, Special Olympics, and Alzheimer's Association... so many places and people you can help. While some may have enough help, don't be discouraged. There is always someone or something that needs a little more.

5) Create your own activity

Read the news. There are disasters and hardship worldwide. You can start a fundraiser for AIDS orphans in Africa. You can send money or more to those who suffered through a hurricane down South. There are countless ways to help others.

I always like to think that if I were in trouble, I would absolutely appreciate the kindness and generosity of others. Even though I may have papers or homework to do, I remember this and take the time to hold my hand out. I don't want to sound self-righteous, only humble and truthful.
