Does Fashion Intimidate You?
65Frankly, it scares me witless! To think that something that started off as purely functional has now become an ‘industry' that a lot of people take very seriously is frightening enough. The fact that I can't understand the phenomenon at all is secondary.
When Early Man was covering himself with scraps of animal hide to preserve his modesty one imagines he wasn't particularly concerned with cut and colour. Of course one can't with any authority really say the same for Early Woman. She was probably rejecting bearskins for the more glamorous tiger pelt but even she had to settle for what she could get. And the string of bones around her neck could do with a bit of polish but hey, it was neutral enough to go with everything.
So when did basic clothing and accessories capture the imagination, and pockets, of people across the world (and beyond perhaps, some of those aliens are quite nattily dressed) to the extent it has? When did function become Fashion? When did people stop dressing to suit the weather or the levels of modesty prevailing in that era, and start being outfitted according to trends decided by someone with nothing better to do than play around with scraps of fabric and an overactive imagination?
Which in itself might have been alright if those who worshipped at the altar of Fashion did it quietly, happy to get a few admiring looks each time they pirouetted around in some ridiculously expensive creation (they're always creations, Fashion doesn't recognise words like clothes or outfits). But no. That would quite defeat the purpose. What is the point of devoting your energies and bank balance to pursuing this amazing phenomenon if no one is even aware of it?
You can't escape the propaganda. Everywhere you look they're promoting some eccentric designer, a line of completely unwearable but spectacularly flamboyant apparel, shoes that look like they couldn't support a stick, and hideous handbags that you should be slavering for because they have someone's initials stamped all over. Switch on the television and you're being bombarded with incomprehensible fashion shows; open a magazine and the latest bizarre trends stare accusingly out at you from the glossy pages.
What's someone with no interest in being fashionable do? I'm scared to open a magazine today; the dreaded word has even slipped into those that have nothing to do with the Fashion industry. There you are reading a current affairs magazine and behold...a section devoted to festive trends! If you aren't planning to invest in the right kind of sparkly clothes you are definitely not going to be the flavour of the season. They are going to overlook you for someone with more pizzazz, someone who knows that the word ‘bling' is not used to describe a firecracker that makes only a modest sound instead of a loud blang...er...bang.
I'm not a complete slob (though many of my friends and female relatives would disagree) but I refuse to succumb to the pressures of being a la mode. Comfort wins over couture any day and I am much too lazy to revamp my wardrobe with the seasons even if I could afford to. I don't see the sense in tossing out perfectly wearable clothes just because they're now deemed passé, and if my bag resembles something the cat brought in, it's not some new fad - I just couldn't be bothered to get a new one.
My mother and sister despair of me. They think I'm a changeling - some evil fairy whisked away their doll-like relative and replaced her with this...this...the word fails them. Why, she wouldn't even keep on that adorable pink bonnet that mom spent so many hours knitting! Yes, well, don't get me wrong. I'm not a total ingrate. I loved those fuzzy booties they made me wear because they were nice and cosy, and I'd have loved them more if they were a bright yellow or orange instead of the pink that's de rigueur for baby girls. But you won't get me to wear a hat of any sort. Not then, not now, not ever.
Don't tell the Fashion Police where I live!

FP - don't despair - you're just great as you are :)
The Lady doth exaggerate....she has great dress sense. :)
But I think yes, it is true...the fashion brigade needs to take it down more than a notch or two...what passes for fashion ranges from the sublime to the ridiculous. And yes, I also wonder why it is wrong for me to wear something which is still perfectly wearable, just because it is de rigeur...grrrrrr...
And Jas, I dont agree with you...I like my little bit of gee-gaws, just dont go over the top. But then you are a guy, so you wouldnt understand ;)
Its easier being a man as far as fashion is concerned. You wont find the average middle-class man "fashionable" ;-)
Thanks Jaspal, Shalini and Diana...I almost feel stylish after that! :P
What Ravin...not concerned about haircuts and shoes and accessories? Tch tch! :P
hahahaa....and i thought i am the only one in this world like that...lolllllllll..i see i have some good company here....lolllllll
err next time i am in where ever you live would love to meet those that knew you when you were a dollllllll.nother her dollnesss amongst us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't worry Mamatha you are in very good company!:)
And Neelesh you might live to regret those words! :P
There is no world without fashion ;)
Comfort over fashion anytime! I 'm with you all the way! :)
I think its a generational thing. At this age its comfort over fashion. There was a time I could wear long pencil heels and the most absurd clothes just because they were "in"
My sentiments exactly FP!
But, I always wonder, once those specimens/stickfigures that call themselves models, strut their outlandish 'creations', does anyone ever buy that stuff, let alone wear it???!!
I'm with you on this, Feline Prophet. My mom is the type of person who would be perfectly content to shop from 9-5 every day. She rushes home with her goodies and proceeds to display them out in front of us, asking us to guess how much she paid for each designer style. To her credit, she generally manages to score about $300 worth of merchandise for 29 dollars, but she also has more clothing and accessories than anyone I know. On the rare occassions when I go shopping, I prefer second-hand stores, for their variety, eco-friendly ways, and low, low prices.
I'm glad I'm not the only person who will never own a Louis Vuitton handbag!
Thanks for the comments - I notice not too many men have much to say! :P
Great! I'm one of those people who view it as a necessity instead of a hobby. Woe to me, I guess.
Join the gang RGraf! There are many of us like that out there! :)
comfortably fashionable ..that's me ..but then at the end of the day I prefer the clothes that blend with my body and soul both .I hate the walking talking fashion disasters who copy anything from fashion mags and other places and just wear it without thinking how hurting they are to others .
Promice I won't tell. Great hub!
Hehe...thanks! We cat people must stick together! :P
Good fashion never really goes out of style. Trends come and go. Fashion does not have to be all glamour and bling.
I enjoy fashion. Each season gives you an opportunity to be artistic. But I think what is most important is that YOU feel comfortable in whatever you wear. This brings out your inner beauty! You can accessorize a pair of good fitting jeans and crisp white shirt and still look fabulous!
Just make sure when you look at yourself you are portraying who you are.
Hmmm now was that a Fashion Police comment?
Great honest hub!
Blessings
LOL, so the Fashion police did catch up with me! :P
Fashion is fine as long as you don't become a slave to it. Thanks for dropping by. :)
Ah, shades of yesteryear...there was a time when I was right up on all of that. Designing and wearing and feeling the importance of it.
These years, it's not so important. The body has changed, and the personal goals have changed too.
But I do admire those in the forefront of fashion design. It's an expression, an artistic expression. Where it goes wrong is that it's commercialized in a destructive way.
There has always been an improvement needed on the fig leaf. When the improvement goes to ego and greed, that's where I draw the line.
Thank God for the improvement on the fig leaf ST! OK, well maybe just this once God had nothing to do with it! :P

hahaha .... you're great as you are FP - Feline Prophet, not Fashion Police!
Personally, I'd be happy being that early man, or even an earlier-than-that man, before modesty crept up on us. To be living like nature made us, and intended us to be. Simple thinking and simple living: No wardrobes, no shoes, no haircuts, no accessories, no hassles ...
