Thomas Aquinas Proofs That God Exists

Since time immortal, mankind has wondered about God. Does God exist? How does one prove that God exists? Many Christians' common reply is simply to have faith. This isn't enough for some people.

Thomas Aquinas was a prominent philosopher during the 1200s. He tackled the subject of proving the existence of God. Aquinas came up with five proofs for the existence of God. They are motion, contingency, perfection, order, and cause :

Does God Exist? 5 Proofs of Thomas Aquinas

Motion is a reality to humans. For all motion, there has to be a prior force to set it in motion. Go back motion by motion. There has to be a beginning that has has no prior force. This beginning is God.

Compare this to the Bible verse about believing in God because of seeing the wind blowing in the trees. This is also very similar to Newton's Laws of Motion.

Aquinas argued that everything is always in a state of change. Also, all things are contingent upon some other thing in order to exist. There must be an original something that doesn't rely upon something else in order to exist. Here you will find God.

Nature itself is an argument for the existence of God, according to Thomas Aquinas. He notes the perfection in nature. Aquinas instructs us to look at nature's perfections, in greater and lesser degrees. He then states that there must be something that is completely perfect, from which all other things descended in order. Aquinas's answer for this is God.

In a similar vein, Aquinas speaks about the inherent order of the universe. There is such order and organization to the entire universe. How could this come about by pure chance? Thomas Aquinas asserts that this is proof of an intelligent being creating the orderly universe.

Cause is another proof of the existence of God, according to Aquinas. His argument is that new things are coming to fruition always. Each of these events must have a cause. Go back through the causes one at a time until there is only one original cause left. What is the original? God is the answer.

Angela!

Great hub! Personally, I have never questioned his existance as I see his blessings surrounding me every day. I would rather live my life as if God exists only to find out that he doesn't than to live as if there is no God, then to find out that there is!

No, i hve to disagree with perfection on one basis. Nature isn't perfect if it was nothing would exist properly. For example if all plants were perfect one species would be able to colonize all the surface. Though it can't because of such different climates, ground type, percipitation, sun light, and cometition. However nature is changing constantly so that it may stay strong against other plants and animals. For an example once their were no plants on earth because of high Radiation from the sun. After awhile the O3 in other words ozone blocked enough radiation that plants were able to colinize the earth surface. Wow how amazing. IF god made perfection their would never had to be this struggle.

And God saw that it was good. God saw that everything He created was good. When man failed, all of nature was affected. Not only were men affected, but nature itself started dying at that time.

So God is perfect and everything He created was perfect also. Man messed things up, not God.

You got it, SirDent! Scientists are so busy trying to find scientific proof of every existance that they wouldn't know a blessing if it slapped them in the face! Everything WAS perfect until man defied God in the Garden of Eden with the apple. I don't need a scientist to explain that to me!

munroenet, Interesting but I have to agree to disagree. The imperfections in this world have been brought about by man. Leonardo da Vinci used to marvel at the perfection found everywhere in nature. What you say is the argument for the existence of God, not against. Like you say, nature changes. Like Aquinas noted, things change and adapt constantly and everything depends on something else to exist, except for God.SirDent, that's it. Thanks!
