PLUS: A secret at the bottom!

This is a VERY simple and basic Google search command, but I'm writing about it here because most people aren't aware of it - and are completely blown away when they find out about it.

To find out whether Google has visited your website, just go to the main google search page at http://www.google.com

In the search box, type in site:yourdomainname.com

Google will return a list of all the pages that it has indexed on your website.

At the top right, it also tells you how many pages on your site are indexed.

Have a close look at this list.

Are the titles of the page meaningful?

Does the description make sense?

If not, you need to work on the Title and description metatags for each page. Try to make them different, and relevant to the content of each page. The title and description metatags are two one of the key search engine optimization elements of your web page. So you should include keywords relevant to that page.

Little known secret:

Google also indexes PDF files that are on your website. If you didn't know that, check to make sure that you don't have any unprotected confidential documents on your website.

Hey Eric,

I knew about the first one, but I'll have to admit to not knowing about the PDF fact - thanks for the heads-up! :)

Hey Eric, I saw your picture on a forum post and had to click through to see if it was a real picture (my picture is actually my 4 year old son). After reading your profile I'm guessing it is. I'm also guessing that because you live in Tasmania you may have not seen the US television beer commercial for Dos Equis Mexican beer that prompted me to click in the first place. They have one of the coolest, funniest commercials out right now (well, at least in my mind) about the Most Interesting Man in the world - and I swear he looks a lot like you (and that pose you have). You would understand if you saw the commercial, I think. I am wondering if he is real - hence I wondered if your picture was real. I googled the guy and Dos Equis has a website about him http://staythirstymyfriends.com/ if you're interested. I only watched the flash into. The 30 second TV commercial is better as it fits my attention span. I guessing he's made up. Anyway, nice portrait! And interesting job history as well.

@CarpetDiem.

The photo is me, and I hadn't seen the Dos Equis commercial till now.

I recognise that guy! - He was at the "How To Look Interesting" bootcamp I attended recently :-)
Thanks for your comments.

Eric, does the same apply to my different hubs on hubpages? I tried searching the url of my hubpages profile page and Google returned two pages in the search results - my profile page and my hubtivity page. How do I know that my hubs have also been indexed by Google?

Stooge - just search for your hub title in google. It should come up near the top.

If it doesn't, try bracketting the title - ie put quote marks around it in your search.

(Google should index your hub pages in a short time.

For example, if you search for "overshadowing serious writers" you'll see that your recently published hub is at the top for this term.

So - the trick for writing popular hub pages is - do your keyword research. Work out appropriate keywords - then write a hub adressing the search term.
