Does Obama Deserve the Nobel Prize?

Alfred Nobel sais that the Nobel Peace prize should go "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations and the abolition or reduction of standing armies and the formation and spreading of peace congresses."

Please, do not get me wrong when I pose the question on whether or not President Obama should or shouldn't win the Nobel Peace Prize. But it makes me wonder this:

A) WHAT did he do to deserve the win?

B) There were 205 submissions to review, more than ever, if I remember correctly. He was to take office in TEN days. Before that, he was just a state senator running for President who won.

C) Why did he win?

Again, he is not a bad person, I do want him to do well, but since entering the office, he hasn't accomplished a whole lot. His health care proposal seems to be beaten to death by a majority of people, he hasn't really done anything (it seems) with the troops in Afghanistan, and he had beer with his pastor and a cop. That last point would, is, cute, but when people look back on it, when President Obama has accomplished some of the things he said he would do, people are going to wonder what is more important to our President. Having a beer with two people who could have worked it out on their own? Or helping America become the beautiful nation we all know she can be, by being true to the promises you made?

Before I go on, I would like to give you all an excerpt from an MSN article about President Obama's win:

It came a week late, but President Obama did win the gold. Last Friday, the International Olympic Committee stiffed him. Today, he won the Nobel Peace Prize. He should probably leave his schedule open next Friday, because apparently anything can happen.

It was the second time in three years that the peace prize went to someone trying to create a new international climate. In 2007, Al Gore shared the prize for his efforts to combat global warming. Explaining this year's selection, the committee credited Obama not for concrete accomplishments but for atmospheric ones. "Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said. "His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."

Perhaps it is just me, but would it not make more sense to award someone who has actually ACCOMPLISHED something worth while? Perhaps someone who has achieved peace in south Compton? Or someone who created a cure for AIDS? Or someone who became a champion for people in wheelchairs, which then prompted someone else to build something that would allow them to walk? I sound harsh, but unless President Obama did something more concrete to help the enviorment, why award him?

Would it be correct to assume that they gave him the prize due to his oral history? In other words, because he has some great speeches? I guess so. The MSN article thinks so.

The news came as such a shock that White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs responded to CBS News White House Correspondent Peter Maer with one word: "Wow." Gibbs phoned the president at 6 a.m. to give him the news.

Wow, indeed. It just boggles my mind that President Obama has been awarded such a prestigous award so EARLY in his career as President. I understand if he was awarded this prize in, say, two or three years, but not when his first year hasn't even REACHED this full year mark. It makes me wonder, plain and simple.

I truely want what is best for our President and I want him to do what is best for our country. Have him follow through on the promises he has made. Let him prove himself. But to this American, he has yet to do that. He has yet to demonstrate the power that was given to him and again, I wonder why he was awarded this prize when he hasn't yet accomplished much.

Is it awarded to him because the world sees him as the man who can save America? The one person who can repair the damage that might have been done by Bush? Who knows....

The Sablirab - Thanks for this Hub.

To answer your question with one word: No.

Shame on the Nobel Prize Selection Committee. Ghandi did not win a Nobel Peace prize. Ghandi!!!!

The committee has denigrated the process & the prize, making it as honorable & valuable as a trinket from a box of Cracker Jacks.

According to the selection committee, President Obama received it for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples".

I just do not see any "extraordinary" efforts. He is talking nice & playing well with others on the world stage, but so far, there has been no policy changes implemented that have addressed issues in a manner that has cooled off any of the hotspots around the globe.

Sorry for the rant. :>)

I'm not an Obama basher, and like you, i wish every American president well. But, i am a great admirer of the Nobel Prize, and have always believed in their integrity. Suddenly, today, i was in doubt, and so many questions raised through my head. Why Obama?

Ken - Don't worry about the rant, it is certainly justified. I wish him well, but he just hasn't done a whole lot to deserve this award.

IslandVoice - Not an Obama basher either, like to think of myself as neutral when it comes to him, but I just had to wonder.

The Sablirab - I wish President Obama well also. It still, after think about it all day, strikes me as a mind-boggling choice at this point in his presidency.

I heard someone say, "Congratulations, Mr. President. Now go earn it." I guess I'd echo that thinking.
