Does a baby feel the umbilical chord being cut off?
68
I have to admit the first time I gave birth, I was medicated and I barely remember whether or not my child seemed affected. However, in my second and third births I was very aware and when the cord was cut carefully, not pulling at baby or mother in any fashion, I did not notice that the cutting caused discomfort. The cord itself is made of tissue and no nerve endings which leads many to say that nothing is felt when it is cut.
However, it can at least be felt from an energetic perspective as it definitely did connect baby and mom for quite some time! The umbilical cord also supplies the infant with much needed blood and oxygen as she starts life. The cord can be left untouched until at least it stops pulsating to allow for the blood and oxygen to flow to the baby.
Some mothers even choose a Lotus Birth, where the umbilical cord is not cut and the placenta is kept with salt or other herbals to encourage healthy decomposition until the cord naturally falls off, within a few days. I know, maybe a little more information than the general public wants, but it is a big world out there!
The question brought to mind a similar, but much easier question to answer, "Does a baby boy feel when his foreskin is cut off or circumcised?" I have a resounding, "Yes!" to that one.

No doubt :o)
OMG. So some moms carried baby AND placenta around for the first few days. Bet it discouraged the overly anxious visitors that usually show up to soon ;)
Yes - that would be an added perk. From what I understand, it doesn't last too long, though! You think that's out there, I spoke with a mother once who was eating her placenta. Chopped in salsa. Some mammals do this in the wild and it is purported to be healthy in some ways... Cuts down on postpartum blues due to hormone levels being maintained (!)
Yum, pass the salt.

I don't remember, either one. (Thank goodness!)
