Helium and other writing sites

As a freelance writer I signed up for 3 different writing sites at the same time. My goal was to succeed as a better writer. I found three sites where I could post my articles to earn money and just write what I love to write about. The three sites are Helium, Associated Content and Hubpages.

On Helium I have a total of 17 articles. 2 of which are currently pending in the market place. Helium offers a variety of things to earn you money. Pay per click articles earn you a penny. Marketplace holds many job offers for you to submit articles to publishers but the competition can get fierce. The contests run on Helium offer great monetary compensation however these contest get very active. My experience with them since May has been very good. The community forums have lots of outstanding people to help you and guide you. They are friendly and fast to answer questions. On the money front though I cannot say they are great. I have earned to date with little to no promotion 9 cents in page views. Nothing in the market place although I am hopeful of the last two articles and nothing in the contests although one article is still entered. The contest entered ends on June 30.

Associated Content is one of the other sites I write on. I have been writing there more as I have made more money. I have earned over $57 in less than 2 months from upfront payments and from calls for content. I have made $1.41 in page views on this site also. The forum of writers is excellent although review times are slow for the moment. The contests they run can be interesting and they vary. They offer writing competitions and sticker contests each with money rewarded. So far I am happiest with them.

Hubpages is the last place I write. I love to write and answer requests which is what most of my hubs here have been based off. I have earned in google earnings $2.00 for my 8 hubs. Not a bad start with no promotion. The writers here seem friendly and encouraging.

Each site has its pros and cons. The only time I had any problems with pages not loading was when the sites were updating or changing their formats. After a day the problems were fixed.

Find which one works best for you and use it to your advantage. Keep writing!

I have not been too impressed with Helium. I am not so sure their rating system is accurate. To get your articles read they should be rated pretty high. I have some that are rated number one or two, and still have earned only a couple of dollars for these articles. I have been on there over a year and have only amassed fourteen dollars and some change. I prefer Gather, don't know if you've heard of it, but it rewards you for content as well as participation. I hadn't heard of Associated Content, will have to check that one out.

yup, associated content is good for N.American and Canadian writers because they actually pay good rates for quality articles and you don't need to just depend on page clicks.

Helium marketplace is good for starting freelance writers who do not have a portfolio yet; at least you get picked by the quality of your work. Downside is, if you did not get picked, just expect to earn a few cents for that article in helium.

But for those creative writers. Don't waste so much time in article writing, your short stories can earn you as much as $700 in glimmer train, and The Sun, Orion and others pay good money, over $1,000. for well-written essays.

...jst started reading the hubs in this site again and many articles are great. I don't think you can earn much in this site, but being connected to the hub community is a good experience.

CelinaMac - yes you can earn quite good money on HubPages with articles, better than I've achieved anywhere else so far.  I found Helium disappointing - they pay a fraction what I get on Hubpages even though I have a lot more articles on there.

I do think it's fun for newbie writers because the community is (or used to be) very supportive.  The forums seem quieter these days so I'm not sure that is still so much the case, though.

Since finding Hubpages and seeing how well it is laid out for writers and for affiliates -- I personally think helium should give writers more freedom with the advertisers. They should also graph page views and show more stats for thier writers.

For some writers, motivation has to be really good!
