Does anybody really make money with affiliates?
Hmmm, I can't say I didn't ask myself that exact question a time or two. Much like Sasquatch, the affiliate that actually makes money online, sometimes seems like a legend.
When I started my search for "online riches" it all seemed so simple.
After all I'd put myself through college (double major), as a single parent, got straight A's while doing it, and held down a full-time job at the same time. . . hell, I was smart enough to pick up online marketing right?
Especially if there was a "proven system" to follow, I had it made in the shade. . .
My Masterplan:
I'd work on my "business" for couple months, retire and live the good life (just like all those folks they advertise on the web). . . I had it all planned out.
Guess what? I got ripped off! Amazing.
Whooda thought there'd be liars and cheats out there, just waiting for some poor (educated) sap to come along and plunk down a couple hundred bucks for their "proven system"?
Okay I admit it, I got greedy, I didn't think about the big picture of what business actually was: here's Wikipedia's definition of business.
I thought I was smart enough to sniff a scam out from a mile away. And doesn't the "Better Business Bureau" watch out for stuff like that anyways?
My Vision of the Future
I tricked myself into believing there was some magic button out there that would miraculously make you rich.
I watched "The Secret" after all. I focused on what I wanted: I didn't want to work so hard, I wanted to get paid more for the work I did, and I really wanted to get rich just like all those smiling people on the websites.
I wanted to travel to different countries, sit on the beach in Jamaica sipping mai-thais, go deep-sea fishing in Baja, and drink wine in Venice.
But in reality, there I was, staring at my computer screen, confused, a little pissed off, and nowhere close to making money on the Internet.
Sasquatch had gotten away again!
Here's What I Did About It
I went right out and got ripped off a few more times falling for salesletters that made all the sense in the world. I guess I figured that if I was paying for all this information somebody was making money on the Internet. I just needed to figure out how. . .
And only when I stopped looking for Sasquatch did I find him
So I really dug deep within myself to find out how to market on the Internet, and slowly it started making more and more sense. I stopped listening to the folks that were talking about Sasquatch.
I dug deep into the things I was passionate about. I looked at markets that had people searching for information totally unrelated to "making money on the Internet."
And there he was standing in all his glory. . . the legendary Sasquatch, a little less exciting than I had imagined him, a little harder to find than I had pictured, but I had begun making money with affiliate programs. . . and you know what?
It wasn't as hard as you might think.

The 4 Step Formula to Find Sasquatch
I believe we all have a personal Sasquatch, just waiting for us to find and claim as our own.
There was this book I read when I was a kid, you can see a picture of it on the right. It's called "There's No Such Thing As A Dragon"
It's a great story about a boy with a tiny dragon in his room, he tells his mom about it, and she of course says "there's no such thing as a dragon." The more the boy's mom ignores the dragon and convinces the boy dragons don't exist, the bigger the dragon gets; until finally it runs off with their house. And they can't deny that dragons exist anymore.
Step #1 - Admit you have a dragon living in your house. . . even if you can't see it now
Sasquatch, affiliates who make money, and dragons have gotten a bad rap for being make believe. To nonbelievers, thos who believe in such elusive creatures are to be ignored, or worse ridiculed.
Your personal Sasquatch wants to be found. If it didn't you'd have no reason to go looking for it in the first place. . . Admitting you have a dragon you'd like to find is the first step toward manifesting it in your life (I love mixed metaphors).
Like an addict who wants to recover, the first step to recovery is recognizing you have a problem. Why do you think addicts claim their addiction every time they introduce themselves at a meeting? In a room full of people who don't believe in Saquatch (or dragons) having your own personal Sasquatch can feel embarrasing, but you must claim it as your own.
Step #2 - There are not shortcuts to finding Sasquatch
But there is a map.
How many times have you felt utterly alone in the world? I know I have. Like most people who have spent time searching for something most people don't even believe exists, I have been subject to ridicule and scorn from friends, family, and strangers. . . most people who go in search of monsters are thought to be a little weird.
"Monsters don't exist," they'll tell you. Don't believe them
What do you think most people thought of Columbus when he sailed in the wrong direction for "India," or Galileo when he gave birth to modern science?
"Normal" people would tell you they were kooks. But you don't have to be. There is a map you can follow to earning money from affiliate programs.
Step #3 - Panning For Gold. . . In your Own Back Yard?
Yep, you're going to have to get real with yourself. Tap into those innate qualities within yourself that make you the unique special person you are.
There's nothing amazing about making money with affiliates. You put in the work, you stop listening to the scammers, you get to know people who have the same likes and interests as you do. And you talk (I mean write) to them like a real person, when you do this you will make money as an affiliate.
It's really as simple as that. Need a lesson in writing like you're talking to your best friend? Here's a great free resource.
Step #4 - Slay The Dragon; Love It to Death
You are very close now to finding your personal monster. The thing that has kept you up at night since you were a little kid, gnawing at you from under the bed. Scaring you, reminding you that you are special. It's time to embrace that monster under your bed.
All good things come to those who have faith. You've waited a long time for this. Realize there are thousands of affiliate programs out there, and millions of people. Billions.
If you're trying to earn money with affiliates by trying to sell "how to earn money with affiliates" types of programs, you're not mining the gold in your own backyard.
Nurture your monster, make it go away by accepting yourself and where you are. Realize you have something wonderful to offer the world, then do it. If you need a list of passions you might be interested in, I'd love to show you mine.

We believe that you can really make money with affiliates
Great hook Jesse...and I love the Hubpage...so, who or what is Sasquatch?? I'm still searching.
All in good time my friends. . . I will reveal the true identity of Sasquatch.
Jesse, I LOVE this hub! You reflect the feelings of a lot of us (smarties that we are) who STILL got tricked into parting with our money. I know who my Sasquatch is. I'm so glad I found him...and your hubs!
Good article! Yes I've been scammed many times! I never give up!
Education is required... and clearing negative energy. I have manifested quite a bit in the last 10 years.
It takes hard work, But hard work is not the answer to wealth OR all the ditch diggers would be wealthy! (Is the monkey on your______?)
What do you think?
In my year or so on the net, I've met quite a few people who would call themselves successful online. Maybe it's just coincidence, but in every case, they've spent about two years working hard for no return before they've started making a worthwhile income. As Tvance says, it's not the hard work that's the secret but the research and learning they've undertaken in those two years that's the key.
I've just started out on the net.. being very skeptical about affiliate sales and stuff..as it hasn't brought in any "real" income. as yet.
I think skepticism is natural. There really are scammers and cheats out there. Income comes when you do the right things in the right way. I'm serious about choosing a niche doing what you love, I'm sure you can earn a living in whatever niche you choose it's all about finding people who are as passionate as you are and tapping into their passions. After the hubbub about this lens dies down I will add more modules to it, describing how I've earned money with affiliates.
I'm new to the affiliate possibilities and your article has helped to get things into perspective. Thank you for sharing.
Jesse, You're right with your analysis. Internet marketing - especially affiliate marketing is highly associated with alot of HYPE that will make you feel you have made it. I was once scammed of HYIP programs... well that was $20 investment to yeild $1,500 in 90 days. One thing i cherised so much about affiliate marketing is the ability to learn through ebooks and videos even if they didn't work as promised.
Hardwork and relevance are highly required for you to make your way successful on the internet.
I started making a $7 online just by marketing to a few friends and get them registered for Online Merchant Account under my affiliate link and other few membership sites, I have to tech them the Know How and coming to online marketing of your
affiliate links, this is an interesting mission that requires your relevance with the Big players there like Google,
Yahoo and MSN and could be very very competitive indeed. In fact I almost got frustrated and quit after paying lots of $$$ to get HUGE acclaimed traffic of some GURUS, sometimes if get any, they are ROBOT generated traffic which doesn't convert to sales... Imagine that rip off! and seeing myself not nearing to 5% of the supposed claimed made $$$,000 in 4weeks on many Make Money Online Headlines! Well I counted it all JOY I didn't quit. I have to Diggggg into search engines and many other marketing channels just for FREEEEE stuff!
My fulfillments... I thank God for that day 12th of February 2008 when i came accross and immediately signed up with this great community called HubPages, where you learn from truthful and talented set of people and gain strong relevance with major search engines and others.
Gaining real relevance counts much, for instance you get real people making comments, clicking, buying from any of the HubPages Affiliates Capsules or subscribing/signing up with your affiliate links. There's real hope here. I'm expressing my passion for it gives me joy and fulfillment when i type my hub related key tags and see them show up in the first page of Google, Yahoo etc. I'm learning more daily, gathering and implementing more powerful tips and tools so as to be relevant and productive. It's rewarding to be an internet marketer. Patience is a vital virtue. Focus and taking consistent right actions = Good Success!!!
Been there, done that! I believe in goals, however, I strive to be happy in the now, versus thinking about future money and trips, and the life of the rich and famous. I think once I let go of that and started living everday that's when all lights started to come on. Thanks for the hub, hits home for many!
Good info - so how did you finally find a formula that worked? I have been messing around with various Affiliate Marketing Programs and I am slowly getting there but far from the "laying on the beach while my web-site is making me money" scenario. One thing I am trying to learn is SEO, search engine optimization. I have been asking much and finding out that it is an important part of web-marketing.
Thanks for all the feedback everyone. Andrew great response, I'm glad you're seeing results in your business. Chantel, yes, living today like you want to live everyday is a huge part of enjoying your work, and growing as a marketer and person great feedback.
I think my biggest obstacle was finally getting it through my head that business is about people, not the internet, not computers, not money (those are just tools). It's about making connections with people and getting them to know you like you and trust you.
Addie, yes SEO is part of it, and I could get into the fact that many believe SEO is going to get harder and harder to accomplish as the search engines get smarter (I'm mean seriously folks Google has like 100 top level PhDs working on their algorhythms, I don't want to compete with that). Here's an excellent resource if you want a great primer on http://aff-masters.sitesell.com/cgi-bin/adb/adb.pl making money with affiliate programs It changed my entire business. Hope it helps. ~Jesse
Do not expect to make a living off of it. Some do better than others, but honestly I have never had any ebay or amazon affiliate sales.
Great hub - love the sassquatch (sp!) Yes you definitly can make money online, a decent income even, but it takes hard work and little, very little luck! Sounds like you've made it - I still trying!
Anyone searching for a work from home business on the internet will find vast amounts of empty promises with slick images of the fancy houses and flashy cars and even the occational yaught to part you from your hard earned cash.
I have joined many business opportunities that seemed to have potential to generate a residual income with mixed results, mostly in me losing money in monthly fee's and online promotion of my project.
I have found ONE that has no sign up fee's, no monthly hosting fee's and no sales targets to reach to continue to earn your commissions. It is My Power Mall. The founder gives an excellent presentation so you only need to sign up for your own free business mall containing 1,000's of brand name stores, get your own links to send out to give away a free mall to all of your contacts, you can purchase from your own stores to make savings only if you want to and you earn a commission from everyone you have given a free mall to and everyone that they have given away a free mall to right down nine levels. If you manage to introduce only one good marketer who grasps this opportunity next Christmas will be paid for, introduce two or three good promoters and you can build your pension.

Very informative hub. You see, I believe almost everyone looking to make money on the Internet has been scam before. This is due to the fact that great money only look to the Internet when they need some quick cash.
Well, it is all part of the game. Now don't get me wrong, of course, I agree nobody want to be scam. But it is part of building a strong foundation for your business. You just need to stick with your goal. And like what see in this discussion that is knowing people who have been scam before but never gave up on their dreams.
Congratulations to you all for your PERSISTENCE and DETERMINATION to see your dream true.
My experience with affiliates is that it can definitely help you to gain some experience of internet marketing and some small amount of money initially without paying a dime. So far i have been very lucky that i have not seen much of scams except A W Surveys which was the second site i joined. Before joining any site i now search for it on the web and see if it has got any negative remarks. As one member has rightly commented 'persistence and determination' can help ou to taste success on the internet.
Everyone here has really given excellent advice, and the truth really is that it's hard to figure out what your visitors want at first, but when you've figured out what people want you can optimize your content to feed your visitors. Too many people use a shotgun approach to building an affiliate business online, this is trouble for all but the luckiest and the smartest marketers (not people like me) I had to learn the hard way to figure out what my visitors wanted. When I finally did the affiliates did all the selling I was just the bridge my visitors crossed to find what they were looking for.

Great hub Jesse, I can definetly relate to your story. I've been around the block a couple of times myself and the scammers got at me a few times to. Glad to hear you finally found the answer.
