Does jail accomplish anything?
71What does jail accomplish?
I was recently asked the question, "Does jail accomplish anything?" And I thought to myself, "That's a really good question!" And so I had to go and reflect for a while and here's what I came up with. So, "Does jail really accomplish anything?" Let us consider. "Jail" or "Incarceration" is allegedly a solution to a problem "crime". "Exercise" is also suppose to be a solution to various problems, such as being overweight, lack of stamina, high blood pressure and various other health problems that are related to lack of exercise. But does exercise really resolve these issues for everyone? I don't claim to know it all but I do know this: That the chances of "exercise" being able to resolve someone's health problems is certainly increased by them participating in a rigorous routine consistently over an extended period of time. And so it is with "incarceration". If "exercise" is considered a possible solution to various health problems, then I'm assuming that apparantly people consider "incarceration" as a solution to "lawlessness".
So what is the rigorous routine that is consistently being practiced by those who are incarcerated to make them law abiding ethical citizens? What self-help program is being administered to the various inmates that we sent away to be "rehabilitated"? Is there such a program? And if so, by which Psycho-Therapist was it designed? What is the success rate of it? Has it been tested and tried and proven to be effective? There are proven principles to make automobiles, airplains, computer programs & various other witty-inventions, and you mean to tell me that there are no proven principles to build up the character of men?!
Whether or not there is such a program existing and in operation in the multitude of "Correctional Facilities" throughout America, I know not. If there isn't, well, there should be. With all the money being budgeted for "Correctional Facilites" throughout America, you would think that they must have the highest paid Psychotherapists working around the clock in the "Research & Development" division of "The Department of Correction" constantly working on ways and techniques to build up the character of men. I don't know if they have a "Research & Development" division for the multitude of "Correctional Facilites" throughout America or not. But why wouldn't they? They have one at NASA and at the CIA and at the FBI. I mean, isn't crime prevention a major concern of Americans?
I do not know if they have one or not, but the multitude of "Correctional Facilities" throughout America should have one of the most extensive self-help libraries on American soil. I mean, if you are not going to push for a self-help program to be implemented for the "lawless & immoral" to improve theirself, at least provide them with the resources to do the same.
If there is no self-help library in existence in the multitude of "Correctional Facilites" throughout America, and if there is no "self-help" program in existence to build up the character of it's occupants, is it not because there was never any intension on behalf of Law-Enforcement to "rehabillitate" these individuals in the first place?
That's like sending someone to the gym who has no
knowledge at all whatsoever about weights or nutrition and expecting
them to compete in a muscle-man competition.
We as a people need to take more time to look past appearances and think more deeply. For then, and only then will we increase our chances to eliminate the various problems that beset us today.

I have always considered the "jail and prison tactics" unjustifiable and waste of tax dollars. I to am going to research this and get back to you. Thanks for this hub, it is an awareness not many care much about.
Good hub. You pose a lot of good questions that really plead for answers. Keep up your research.
To "everyone", I feel that collectively we can bring about reform or at least be a "catalyst" of it. I will keep researching this issue myself to see what I come up with. Let me know what you all come up with as well, I'm interested to brainstorm with you all.
Well I can tell you of one person, known to me many years ago. He started off straight, but had that sort of car saleman character you know" i could sell ice to the Eskimo's" As he progressed further into his criminal activities, even the ice he could sell to the Eskimo's, would have had a question hanging over it "Hot or not" He wheeled and dealed, his activities notched up 4 gaol sentences, that I know of numerous, episodes of P.D. (A sentence served outside gaol) and was perpetually robbing Peter to pay his spiralling Court fees, and fines. His incarcerations, each time made him worse. He' is basically an alcoholic braindead, wasted article today. So it did'nt help him.
However there is in new Zealand a large Section of the Country that serve light gaol sentences between 20- 35 and statistics are that these people only offend once.
I don't know the answers, what works for one, doesn't necessarily work for someone else. I personally would consider loosing my freedon, as much a horror as loosing a limb, but that is me.
Another interesting and excellent Hub.
Mandy" Wow! Those are some interesting statistics from New Zealand. I wonder what do they do to keep their statistics so low?

I thank you for writing this hub, its a very difficult question and one that I intend to give a considerable amount of thought and come back to.
